100 year old woman in Yarm
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 03:57 GMT (UK) »
When my dad was around 3 years old (in 1929 or 1930), he went to the 100th birthday party of a woman relative in Yarm.  He remembers sitting on her lap (he was scared stiff) but has no idea who she was.  It drives him crazy and I'd love to figure it out for him!  To date, I haven't been able to find a clear connection with Yarm in any branch of the family, so I don't even know what name to start with.  However, there can't be that many women in the area who died at over 100 years old in the early thirties - can there?  Does anyone know of any way I can search death records by age at death?  I have a handful of last names that are possible - Price, Wainwright, Wetherall, McDermott
Chant - Hull, Plymouth
Price - Harborne, Liverpool, Failsworth, Hull
Smith - Bretforton, London
Wylie - Dudley Port, Birmingham, Liverpool
Wainwright - Harborne

How's about contacting the local newspaper. A hundredth birthday is likely to have made it into print. It would take some searching but might come up with something, given that you do have a fairly short time scale.

Or perhaps the local churches would have had parish magazines where she would have merited a mention.

FreeBMD doesnt seem to have any after 1929, and will beimpossible to look after that theough full indexes without a name.

Here are those, in Yorkshire, who appeared to die at 100 or over in 1929.

Betsy Hall age 100 Jan/Feb/Mar 1929 Sculcoates
MAry A Townsley 102 Jan/Feb/AMr 1929 Howden
JAne Woodhouse 102 JAn/Feb/AMr 1929 Knaresborough

but Jen's idea is the best! Remember, the lady in question, if married, may have a surname that has not cropped up in the family before.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks for the ideas!  I'm in Canada, so looking at newspapers might be a little difficult, but I'll see what I can do by email. I've got my dad searching his memory (which is pretty good for an 82 year old) to see if he can remember anything else that might help.  My biggest worry is that he is remembering the place all wrong - Yarm doesn't show up anywhere in the family history that I can see so far.  It would definitely be in Yorkshire however.

Thanks again for your help.

The local paper for the area of Yarm is the Evening Gazette, now you can contact them on

http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/

they do run a section of remember when, so they may print your story and the local people who read the paper may be able to help, it is local to me.  Also Yarm, may have been classed as County Durham in those days if your looking for BMD

Good luck

I found my Yarm births listed under Yorkshire, going back to the late 1700s so hopefully you won't have to start tackling Durham as well.  :)

Really?    I have always thought of it as Yorkshire through and through!   Never Durham!

Thanks Dawnkaren - that would be great if you could ask your family, as I haven't had a chance to follow up with the newspapers yet (too many geneaology things to do).  Any kind of a hint would be better than what I'e got now!
