French Moroccan Immigrants
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 20:14 GMT (UK) »
Really need some help...currently researching a family tree for my friend.
Her father (now deceased) was French Moroccan.
Her mother never spoke of him, as they had the marriage annulled, but what my friend does know is that her father was french moroccan, and when he arrived in the uk, his parents had changed their names to a more English name...there new surnames was Gilberthorpe, however, my friend believes he had the surname Guilbert, or Gilbaird (sp)

My friend was born 1946, so her french moroccan grandparents were most likely here prior to ww1.

Does anyone know, with what little info we have, how to locate records, or where to start even with this one!!

Thanks

Colleen

Hi Colleen,

Why do you think the grandparents were here prior to WW1?

Does she have a d.o.b. for her father???

Did he die in England -if so when??

Death reg would give his age

Does she have the date of parents marriage - there should be a marriage reg -we can check the complete index if you have an apprx date

I think you (your friend) needs some dates before she tries to get further back

Hi Suzard,

Her father was born in uk, she estimates his birth as about 1920..as she was born in 1946.
From speaking to her mother (also deceased),. the little information she gave was that his parents came over and he was born in the uk....now, I have tried to locate his birth under Gilberthorpe..and can not find it.
Sadly after the marriage was annulled, he disappeared, and was never seen again, and she does not know when he died, only that she found out some years after his death that he had died, from her mother.
Sadly her mother refused to speak anymore on the matter and in her own words, she wouldn't have dared ask!
Again, unable to locate a marriage reg for his parents, as we have no names!
I was hoping, if I could search under the Guilbert, or Gilbard surname, something may crop up...or if there was any info out there on french moroccans migrating to the uk.
Thanks

Sorry-I didn't mean henry's mother's name - I meant henry's wife's name

Even though the marriage was annulled there should be a registration
Even if henry was a bigamist there would be a marriage reg for each of his marriages

there are death reg's for henry Edward Gilberthorpe in 1994 -d.o.b. 20 Oct 1920
and henry Gilberthorpe in 1990-d.o.b.18 Nov 1907

Can I ask where the deaths were registered?
Harry Gilberthorpe married Mildred I Tones c1945...haven't found the marriage yet and my friend(aunt) was never told any info on the marriage other than it was annulled! Lol....very disfunctional...but apparently, there was a huge scandal over her mother marrying a man who was coloured, added to the fact she was engaged to another man who had been away at sea and returned to find her married and with child in tow to a french moroccan...thats the lot of info we have lol!
