Jewiss in Australia

Hi can you help me.  I am looking for the record of Sarah Ann and William Robert Jewiss arrival in Australia.  I have searched all the shipping lists I can find but to no avail.

Their first child Sarah Ann was born in Gravesend Kent in 1851.

William was a waterman and worked in Port Melbourne.

Sarah and William lived in Port Melbourne at least from 1855 as they had a child William Robert  b1855.


They left for New Zealand  from Australia on the Arabiain 1861.

I found a family on the unassisted passengers into Victoria on the Public Records of Victoria web site. Different spelling but I thought I would tell you in case it might be your lot.

Mr W Jewess aged 37, Mrs Jewess aged 24, Child aged 1 and an Edward Jewess aged 27. All aboard the Schomberg voyage arriving December 1855.British Port. Fiche 103 Page 009

Unfortunately it does not look like them,  William was born in 1830 and Sarah in 1833.

But thank you anyway.

Are you sure this is your Wm on the outward bound passengers as there is no family listed.

as the births and deaths on the indexes show this couple having a child in 1863 in Melbourne.

Hi Cando,

Family stories tell that after emigrating to NZ Sarah Ann came over to AUS to give birth to her children.  It sounds a little strange I know but that is the story, so the child you found in 1863 would be right in fact she had five  in AUS altogether.

Quite strange....couldn't think of anything much worse than being pregnant and sailing from NZ to Melbourne in 1863 for the birth  

You didn't mention the deaths of two of the chn ....so just in case you don't have them

You say all the family left in 1861 so she  only returned once so I guess that is not so strange.  Perhaps she had other family in Melbourne.

Lyn when you write I have children do you  mean this family is in your tree?
