Is this an Australian soldier?
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 22:51 GMT (UK) »
A friend of mine has been left a wonderful photo album, full of family photo's most of whom they are ::)

Here's the first one for you wonderfully clever Rootschatters to work on  ;)

By the look of this chaps hat we think he might be an Australian- can anyone shed anymore light...and what does anyone think the name is on it?

We can read the date,30th Sept 1917,but what name does he give, after yours sincerely?

Many thanks

Carol

Yes it is an Australian soldier

I was rather hoping that someone might be able to tell me more about him than that  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks anyway,

Looks like "Allem" or "Allen" and then "Charlie", "somewhere in France"  :)

And yes, he's an Aussie  :)

Hi Carol,

Following on from the other comments, the badge on his left collar is that of the "Australian Commonwealth Military Forces". Will see if I can find a match for the badge on the othe collar...! :)

The slouch hat was worn by British soldiers in WW1(and WW2 and indeed in the Boer War!) as well, so that is not always a pointer!

The tunic is the big giveaway to being Australian, it is quite peculiar to Australian Forces and remained in use right up into WW2. The collar dogs would always come in pairs!

I'm more interested in the shoulder titles...The lower curved one is "Australia", but what is the upper one??

Any chance of a high def scan of the shoulder title pse?
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

What a fabulous photo. I agree with Pru, looks like Allen then Charlie to me. I do hope you find out who he is.

Lyn  :)

Had a thought  ;D. Try emailing the picture with your enquiry to this address General enquiries: info@armymuseumwa.com.au. This is the Army museum at Fremantle W.A. They'll let you know all about the uniform.

Good luck .. Lyn  :)

Thanks all.

I scanned the pic yesterday ,which is glued fast into a photo album belonging to a friend- he has now taken the album back home(70 miles away ;D)
So I can't scan the pic any larger I'm afraid, unless my pal can.

His great grandad, surname Brown, was one of 9 boys, one went to Oz in 1888.
We think it's one of his sons. His name should be Ernest Aylmer or William Ernest Brown. So the names Allen Charlie are perplexing to say the least.
