St Peters, Waterloo and Redfern are all neighbouring suburbs in Sydney, they are all probably within a 5 km radius. Not sure about East Macquarie, not a whiz on New South Wales or Sydney, know some, not others .....

Can anyone else see a shoulder flash on his left sleeve about 3 or four inches down?

To me it appears to be a dark rectangle - this would place him in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Field Companies of the engineers.

Don't know if this helps.
