the following is a great WW1 site for Australian Army. I think the top shoulder insignia may indicate which unit he belongs to. I'd suspect he is one of the soldiers named Charles Allen listed on this site. If we knew the unit per the shoulder insignia you'd be able to narrow it down. I'd strogly suspect he is not one of the Browns you have listed, mayb a friend, cousin .....??

It could be 'cousin'...but the letters look quite differently formed compared to those in the other words.  It would make more sense than 'Allen Charlie' anyway!

I think he has written his name in military fashion, surname first followed by given name, as in ALLEN, Charlie. The Allen even looks underlined as a nother way of emphasising the surname. I think he is Charlie ALLEN

His great grandad, surname Brown, was one of 9 boys, one went to Oz in 1888.
We think it's one of his sons. His name should be Ernest Aylmer or William Ernest Brown. So the names Allen Charlie are perplexing to say the least.

Hi Carol

Do you happen to know the name of the Great Grandfather (William Ernest's father)

This is the service record for a William Ernest Brown, father's name William (second looks to be Ebeneger ?) Brown. Townsville, Queensland

http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=1796106&I=1&SE=1

There is another William Ernest Brown listed but his file states that he died of wounds.

Sandy, that's a great site- I am having a play with it now.
The trouble is my Oz geography ain't too good(nor is my UK one!)

The link that kyt just provided is for a Thomas Ernest Brown?

William Ernest was born in 1890 and his father was Arthur Aylmer Brown(e), who went over to Oz in 1886- with his cousin Ernest Edward Brown.

Ernest married a Agnes Gorrill(or Garrill) in 1888 ,but he very sadly died after only 2 months of marriage,Agnes was already pregnant with son Ernest A(prob Aylmer)who was born in East Macquarie later that year. He died in 1919 in Redfern, not sure if as a result of the war or not?

His cousin Arthur Aylmer Brown(e) then married single mum Agnes and brought Ernest up as his own, they had 3 further children Florence E who died age 5 in 1897 in Waterloo and William E in 1890.Also Lydia G born St Peters in 1894. Lydia married Arthur Baker in 1912.

Presumably someone local can tell how far they moved areas???

Will relay this all back to my friend, who appears not to be online yet today DOH!!!

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Carol
