James Huckson of Hereford
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 00:52 GMT (UK) »
I have an 1838 "Marshall's New Pocket Repository" which was owned by James Huckson. I think he was probably born around 1814, possibly in Gloucester, but he was living in Hereford in 1838. The centre of the book has a diary, which James has filled in. I'd like to know more about him, in particular, if he married Betsy!

Is anyone here researching the Huckson family?

Thanks for your time and trouble Pam. I think it could easily be "my" James.

I researched my own family pretty comprehensively around 25 years ago and only recently pulled all the papers out again. I haven't yet signed up to any of the online resources, so I can only pull up very limited information from what's available free of charge. It does seem to be a pretty rare surname in Hereford/Gloucester however and the only one I could find whose birthdate seemed right is, I think, the same James you've found. There's a possible marriage in 1848 to Ann Cook. I also found a possible date of death of 1905 aged 92, so as well as a "long" family, he had a very long life!

What I know is that he was living away from home. He sounds young as he writes about parcels from home, and visits from his father. Also, he had a lively social life and a number of young women are mentioned, Betsy Matthius being the most frequent, so I'm certain that he was still single. I can't work out what he did for a living, but the grocery trade certainly isn't impossible. When I read about him making candles, I assumed it was for himself, but it could just as well have been for a shop in which he worked.

I'm glad that he seems to have done well in life, even if he has disappointed me by not marrying Betsy!

hello

I have tried to find betsy, but no luck.

Nice to see him live a long life, with a family.
Making candles for sale in the grocer shop would be feasable.

Regards

Oh wow, that's a lot of information. Thank you for taking the time to type it out.

I'm afraid I'm not related to James Huckson at all. I collect antiquarian books and my hobby is bookbinding. A local bookdealer with whom I'm friendly gave the book to me because it had no boards left and 2 pages of the printed part were missing. It was unsaleable as far as he was concerned, but he knew I'd rebind, read and treasure it and he was absolutely right on all 3 counts. It's a favourite book in my little collection.

I enjoyed reading the diary and inevitably became interested in the writer. I'm as sure as it's possible to be that he's the James to whom you're related as being a grocer does fit with some of the entries, although most are concerned with his life outside of his work.

I have to go out now, but if there's enough light when I get home, I'll take a couple of pictures of some of the entries. They're not that easy to read by the way. I must have read the diary several times and there's still the odd word I can't decipher.
