Do you know Widnes lancs ?
« on: Sunday 06 February 05 09:39 GMT (UK) »
I spent 3.5 hours this morning trawling the web trying to find some information about a pub in Widnes with no luck. I finally fell asleep over the keyboard at 3 am. Adictive insn't it!?

Does anyone know anything about  Widnes? I need to know something about the pub on the corner of 46 Lugsdale Road and Anne Road.

In 1881 it was called Stanley Arms and was owned by Finton Lawlor and his wife Annie Lawlor (nee O'Hagan)

I believe it may now be called either `Boilermakers Arms' or `Volunteer Inn'

I found a very interesting site on Widnes History by Barry Miller but none of the links seemed to work so it is probably abandoned.

I would love a picture of the pub if anyone can help and perhaps some information if possible.

Hi earley

Kicking myself because I did find a site when looking for a pub in Wigan that listed photos of pubs across the whole of the north west and I'm darned if I can find it now.
But I note from the site you visited which listed the two pubs that they were in a ist of pubs closed by order, with compensation, so I wonder if they were demolished?

cheers

Paul

PS

I went to Widnes once and I vowed never to return! :)

The site I found tantalisingly has 2 minute pictures of the 2 pubs in Lugsdale Road but cannot copy them off as they are part of some animated process Grrrrrrrrrr

I guess it just makes you all the more determined  ;D

I.ve found a lot of sites listing pubs but all the names I've entered have drawn zilch.
I even found a very useful list of licencees but nothing there either. This might be a good avenue though as my GGFather would have been registered somewhere as a licencee.
Maybe I should post a request for a source of recorded licencees  :)

Excellent thanks.
that now is confirmation of the two pubs in Lugsdale Road.

My ancestor owned the Stanley Arms in 1881 according to the census. It was number 46 Lugsdale on the corner with Ann Street

Sadly he died a few years later in 1889 and the family got split up to live with relatives at nearby 22 Ann Street.
I presume the pub was sold and the name changed to either Boilermakers Arms or Volunteer Inn some time before 1904 .

Hi earley

Have you tried posting this on the Lancashire board - some more serious Rootschatters never venture into the Lighter Side.

cheers
