Jane Hughes & James Walker - Mold
« on: Monday 01 December 08 07:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have just discovered that my ggg grandmother was Ann Hughes.  She was born in Mold in about 1825 before she married a Congleton man in Manchester.  At her marriage she goes by the surname Hughes, but gives James Walker as her father.  According to the IGI (Bishops Transcripts) there is one Ann Hughes born to Jane Hughes and James Walker - presumably they weren't married at the time but the father owned up to fatherhood?  Or could she be an 'adopted' daughter of James?

I can't isolate the particular Jane Hughes on the IGI, and there is no James Walker born in the right time frame.  I wonder if those of you with more local knowledge might be able to help me find out any more about this family.

Many thanks

Hello Fiona

Do you have the year Ann married the Congleton man in Manchester?

Could she have been a widow when she married him?

Paul

Good thought Paul - I hadn't thought of that in this particular case.  Ann had given Hughes as her maiden name on one of her children's birth certificate so when I heard of Hughes and Walker attached to her name in terms of her marriage and looked on the IGI, I rather jumped to a conclusion.

I think I also got a little excited because the name Jane is so prevalent in her children and grand children.

I won't actually have the marriage certificate in my hot sweaty mits until later this week, so I'll review then.

Many thanks

Got the m/c!

Date of marriage: 5 Sept 1841 at St Mary's Church in Manchester

Ann Hughes, full, spinster, 22 Water St.
Father: James Walton (sic), overlooker

Witnesses: James Walker (sic) and Elizabeth Hughes

That she has reached her majority age in 1841 doesn't bode well for an 1825 birth so went back to censuses:

1881 aged 56 ie abt 1825 in Mold, Flintshire, Wales
1871 aged 46 ie abt 1825 in North Mold
1861 aged 38 ie abt 1823 in North Wales
1851 aged 24 ie abt 1824 in Holywell, Wales

The m/c is from the PRO, but LancsBMD (a free BMD for Lancashire using local registry office indexes listed their marriage as follows - double entry is used when more than one surname eg widows, but as you can see same reference number so only one marriage):

Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
HUGHES Ann JACKSON Thomas Manchester, St. Mary Manchester 9/2/271
JACKSON Thomas HUGHES Ann Manchester, St. Mary Manchester 9/2/271
JACKSON Thomas WALKER Ann Manchester, St. Mary Manchester 9/2/271
WALKER Ann JACKSON Thomas Manchester, St. Mary Manchester 9/2/271

So a few things to ponder - not least the mention of Holywell, although Mold is mentioned twice.  I'm going to fine comb the 1841 census now that I have a few more names and a possible address to attach to her.
