WOODSIDE's of CO DOWN
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 10:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello
My GG Grandfather was ISAAC WOODSIDE born about 1814, he had a brother JAMES born about 1812 and a brother HUGH born about 1817. I believe they came from Co Down and went to Liverpool England prior to 1841. Hugh may have returned to Ireland after 1861.
I am in contact with a desendant of JOHN WOODSIDE born Co Down in 1798 and I am trying to determine if this JOHN WOODSIDE is also a brother to ISAAC, JAMES & HUGH.
I know that JOHN WOODSIDE's daughter JANE WOODSIDE married a JAMES HOUSTON in Holywood Co Down on 8 August 1846 at 1st Holywood Presbyterian Church and they went with her parents and family to Liverpool England prior to 1851. JANE & JAMES HOUSTON had two sons JOHN born in Co Down about 1847/1848 and ISAAC born 1849/1850 in Liverpool England.
I also know that JOHN WOODSIDE's wife was ELIZABETH FLEMING and ISAAC WOODSIDE's wife was MARGARET DAVISON. JAMES WOODSIDE's wife was ELIZA ANDERSON.
Does anyone have WOODSIDE's from (Cultra) HOLYWOOD Co Down in their tree?
I want to find out if the 4 boys had any other brothers and sisters and who their parents were.
Regards

Hi Pat, in case you dont know, here's abunch of tips
from www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com/
FLAX GROWERS OF IRELAND, 1796 - County Down
The Flax Growers  List  also known as the Spinning Wheel Premium  was compiled in 1796 by the Irish Linen Board. There were  60,000 individuals listed and they were given incentives for growing flax.  The rewards were  four spinning wheels for one acre of flax grown, 3 spinning wheels for three quarters of an acre,  two spinning wheels for a half acre, one spinning wheel for a quarter acre.  Those growing five acres got a loom or spinning wheels up to the value of five shillings.
the entry is
Woodside William Holywood Down

This new most exciting website means that you can see a map with the boundary drawn of where people lived, the date is probably about 1865

WOODSIDE  FRANCIS  DOWN  KNOCKBREDA
WOODSIDE  WILLIAM  DOWN  COMBER

etc

On this website you can look up the Woodsides of Co Down www.emeraldancestors.com/search/index.asp?and then you can pay for extra detail
Marriages  31 view details
Births  6 view details
Census  0 view details
Deaths  11 view details
School Register  5 view details

On this website you can look up say Isaac Woodside www.ancestryireland.com/process_db_search_generic.php with the initial result  that might disappoint or otherwise, I found Isaac Woodsides marriages interesting then you can pay for extra detail

Because you need more church records take a look at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/CHURCHES/A-I.htm#Holywood and while at Ros Davies look up her place name  list for Cultra and you get a townland map in its setting of the civil parish of Holywood
Good luck onwards, Jim

Hello Jim
Thank you very much for all the information you have given me. I have looked at these websites and found some connections. I will write to you again once I have sorted these Woodside's out.
At this stage it looks like James Woodside born 1812 and John Woodside born 1798 may be brothers. I found the Church where John Woodside's daughter Jane married on Ros Davies's site. She married James Houston (which I already knew) at the 1st Holywood Presbyterian Church on 8th August 1846 (I had October from IGI).
John Woodside's family must have lived in Antrim as well as his son James born 1831 says he was born in Co Antrim on the 1891 UK census. His sister Ellen or Eleanor was born 1834 in Co Down. These two are single living together and I have only just connected them up to John Woodside born 1798.
I will let you know how I go.
Thanks again
Pat
