What did Brettenham come under in 1841
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 14:40 GMT (UK) »
I cannot find Brettenham on Ancestry on the 1841.  Could anybody please tell me if it came under a different name?

I am trying to find a Thomas Bales who was born there.
He is on the 1851 Brettenham married to Susan with step son George Whiterod, and on the 1861 still with Susan now Susanna.

I am trying to find out who he was married to before Susan Whiterod.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Found this on the 1841 CD.

Brettenham

It looks like Balls but I think its Bales

Richard      60  Labourer
Elizabeth   60
John  37   Labourer
Thomas  30  Labourer
Naomi  34
Robert  10
John  7
Reuben  3
Bettsey 9 months

All born County

I would say the children are Thomas and Naomi's but could be John and Naomi's.

How very kind of you Eileen to look on your CD.  I don't know why it's not on Ancestry.

Anyway, thank you very much indeed.
I am wondering if the children are in fact John and Naomi's as none of them are on the 1851 with Thomas and Susanna.

I shall have to see if I can find a marrige that fits.

Once again thank you very much for your time and kindness

Kind regards

You can search Ancestry by PIECE number ....

HO 107/781 PARISH: Brettenham, Norfolk  --   1841
HO 107/1022 PARISH: Brettenham, Suffolk  --   1841

I actually typed in Balls on Ancestry and it came up Besthorpe but when the page opened it was Brettenham.
Talk about trying to confuse people!

It does look like Balls I agree, but am sure it is Bales, and they are the correct family.

Thank you again for your help

Thank you Newf, I just found it.  Don't know why they had it down as Besthrope though as it is clearly Brettenham.

Thank you for your kind help

as it is in the Nat Archives  :)

I suspect Ancestry lumped it into another set of Enumeration Districts - always worth a quick search of the Nat Archives Catalog in these situations

Thank you for that Newf.  That will be a great help because I have come across the same thing before on Ancestry, especially in the earlier census.

By the way Eileen, the children are John and Naomi's.  I took a look at the 1851 census Brettenham.  And also they are clearly Bales on that.
