Barracks, 1840
« on: Monday 08 December 08 20:38 GMT (UK) »
I have a copy of an ancestor's marraige certificate. He was married in Nottingham in 1840, occupation "soldier" and his address was given simply as "Barracks".

Does anyone know where the barracks were in Nottingham? Were the occupants enumerated in the census the following year?

Cheers   :)

Hi Annie
The barracks are on the 1841 census. They were in Lenton and can be found  HO107/871 folio2/31 page 1

Eric, thanks for that.

I'm having a very senior moment however and can't seem to get anything searching under the ref you give!

The HO107/871 bit is fine
the Folio numbers then give a null result.

Help! Where am I going wrong?  :(

Hi Annie
I just put Nottingham Barracks & county Nottingham into the address search on "Findmypast's 1841 census.

If you don't have any luck, let me know the name you are looking for and I'll have a look for it

Thanks again, Eric - I've found the list but my ancestor isn't on it. I'm not really surprised because he was married by 1841.

I'm going to start another thread and see if someone with sharper eyes can find him anywhere!

Thanks again

Hi Annie,
Sorry this is a bit late, but you may still find these useful.
I'm afraid I can't help you with the census as my subscription has just run out. However, these links will explain where the soldiers were stationed in Nottingham at that time, and will help ypu locate the Barracks, etc.

I hope you manage to find him. These may help, but if nothing else I hope you find them interesting.
Good luck.
