EXE ISLAND, EXETER - Samuel POOLE, dyer - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 08 December 08 23:01 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help, please?
I am interested in Samuel POOLE, dyer, of Exe Island and have a number of questions concerning him and Exe Island.

1.  Which parish covers Exe Island?

2.  Is there a cemetery attached?

3.  When did the industrial area actually close?

4.  There are diary extracts of Samuel POOLE in Devon Documents (ed. Todd GRAY, 1996) pp.37-41 in an article entitled Remarkable occurrences: viewed from Exeter, 1754-1809 by Brian Carpenter.  Does anyone have access to this book or article?

Samuel POOLE of Exeter is supposed to be a brother of my John POOLE (born c1805), pewterer of London - mentioned in their father's Will of 1843.  I know nothing more about him, hence any help would be most welcome.

With thanks,

Jill Statton, Adelaide, South Australia

Hi, Jill, Not sure this will be too helpful, but it might be a start!

1) Genuki lists several parishes that covered Exe Island: Exeter Saint Edmund, Exeter Saint Leonard, Exeter Saint Thomas. See http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/DevonManors/parishes.html.

2) Cemeteries might be attached to the parish churches (possibly excepting St. Edmund's Church, which is on a bridge). However, I'm not sure that any of the parish churches actually stand on Exe Island. Someone with more knowledge of Exeter geography can perhaps answer that.

3) According to this site (http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/EM/exeisland.html), the gas works on Exe Island closed in 1878, and other industry closed in the "20th Century."

4) Can't help with access, but this bibliography (http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Exeter/ExeterGen.html) seems to suggest that the SP in the book lived 1754–1809, making it unlikely that he and John Poole's brother are the same person.

Cheers,
chris

Hello Jill,Have a look at the Exeter City Council website.there's an article about Exe Island there, also a website called Exeter Memories which has photos of the area.be warned it looks as though it was a very poor area. Cemetary wise ,it maybe St.Thomas parish church or the cemetary at Exwick, but I'm not sure how old that one is.

Thank you, Chris and Barbara, but I may have been lead astray by the father's Will in 1843 which mentions his son Samuel in Exeter.

I may have erroneously assumed that Samuel POOLE of Exe Island was my Samuel but after further examination of Census returns, I am now sure he is not.

My Samuel was with his father in London in 1841, as a pewterer.
Samuel the dryer is in Exeter in 1841 and noted by the Census Enumerator as Samuel (Jnr) - Samuel (Snr) was also there, and both these men were stated as being born in the County.

However, by 1851 Census and thereafter, Samuel (Jnr) says he was born in London, but wherever he was born, I do believe this Samuel (Jnr) was Samuel Alford POOLE, and thus not mine.

I cannot locate my Samuel in 1851 Census in Exeter, London or elsewhere - perhaps he had emigrated?

The two families still could be related as the father of my John POOLE was not born in London, so I am keeping them in mind, but for now I shall move away from Exe Island.  Sorry to have bothered you all.  Jill
