Emigration to Canada via West Indies

Hugh Galfried Duplex Kemp (yes, we were surprised too) apparently emigrated to Canada in about 1902.  His WW1 attestation paper shows that prior to getting to Canada he had spent three years in the Trinidad Light Horse.  Can't find any trace of his departure from the UK but it must have been before 1901.

Any help welcome.

Hmm, freebmd shows him as Hugh Galfred D. Kemp, so watch out for name variants.

shows a 'Hugh Galfield Kemp' going to Trinidad and Tobago in 1899
 and also a H. G. D. Kemp heading to Montreal in 1903
both of about the right age.

I take it you have his information from cwgc?  There was also a death notice for him in the Times which says he was son of Alexander Davidson Kemp and grandson of the late Major Thomas Webster.

www.automatedgenealogy.com shows him in the 1911 census in Vancouver.  This confirms his immigration date as 1903.

The H. G. D. Kemp I think jorose is refering to is listed on the  Canadian Ships Passenger Lists as:

H. G. D. Kemp  age 26, born abt. 1877, listed as a painter going to Montreal.  He left from Liverpool and arrived in Montreal aboard the Montrose on May 3, 1903.

That would fit in with his three year stint from 1899 to 1902/03 in Trinidad, but from his Attestation Papers it shows further Military service.  Wonder why it shows him as a painter?

What a great pair of answers.  Thank you both very much.  He went across to WW1 as part of the CEF and died at Gommecourt.  His name is recorded on the Menin Gate.  Despite only being a private (by choice), he got a full obituary in the Times, as a cousin of Field Marshal Sir John French.

We suspect that he left England under something of a cloud, hence the military service, but he was also variously, a painter on arrival in Canada and a salesman at the 1911 Census.  No sign of a marriage, but it may mean something that he gave his brother as his NOK on his attestation papers.

Hello Startt  - apologies for a query out of the blue, but I would be VERY interested in any details you might have about the Kemps.

I came across RootsChat while googling my gg-grandfather Alexander Davidson Kemp.  I know very little about him, except that he was born in Calcutta and lived in Chigwell (1881 census). 

I can offer little in return - except info on his daughter Mary (my g-grandmother, known in the family as 'Madre') and the subsequent generations to my own.

Anyway, if you have any info you can share, I would be most grateful.

Alexander Davidson Kemp (the second) is my wife's gg grandfather as well.  Her g grandfather was Geoffrey Chicheley Kemp, Mary's brother.

ADK 1828 Calcutta the son of another ADK 1802-1843 also of Calcutta.
Your ADK died 7-2-1901 at Charlecote House,Lansdown,Bath.
His daughter Mary Selina F (possibly French) is born in 1870,Charlcombe,Bath.As you know from the 1881 they are at Burnt House, Chigwell and still there in 1891(incorrect details on census for Mary) but after this census I have not tracked down your gg and would be interested to know the line.There is a large family who appear to have been very successful.
The basis of the family fortune (Kemps) was through the East India Company from the 18C.Our 1828 ADK appears to be the only one to have returned to England.
I have gone up to the 1901C and found some marriages post 1901.
