Hunting records
« on: Thursday 11 December 08 11:00 GMT (UK) »
My wife's father, Anthony Dale, came from a long line of huntsmen, including at least one, Will Dale, who was very well known in his day.  Our fairly limited research  to date has shown a number of things.

First, hunt servants often followed a family tradition.
Second, there are some quite good records of individual hunts, if one is lucky enough to find them.
Third, rather differently from the general population, huntsmen tended to move quite widely around the country as different hunts vied for their services, even in early 19C.
Fourth, they often lived in tied cottages, which means that the census returns show them alongside others in the same line of work.  As a result, names crop up repeatedly as individuals moved around different hunts.

Is anyone else researching families in this field?  We would be very happy to collaborate.
