Re. the missing marriage c.1836 between Griffin and Amelia - was transcribed as Griffin Brunning and Amelia May on 13/7/1836 Portsea St. Mary, Hampshire.

Griffin died 1848 and in 1851 Amelia is with John 14, George 10, William 6, Alfred 4 and Mary Ann 2 plus a lodger George Martin 21 who she subsequently married 1852 Southampton (although much younger than her).   The uncle/aunt the 2 elder boys were with in 1861 - Aunt Caroline was indeed a Caroline May and no doubt Amelia's sister as was suggested.

Have you any information on this Griffin & Mary marriage?

Unfortunately not, only marriages between a Griffin & Elizabeth Soaper in 1769 in Hursley and another in 1793 between a Griffin & Elizabeth Buxey in 1793.  Unless there is an error in the 1769 marriage  :-\

There is a baptism in 1789 in North Stoneham for a John Browning, parents John & Elizabeth.  Can't immediately see on in 1799.  Another in 1793 in South Stoneham, parents John & Jane.

Siblings for the John born to Griffin & Mary Browning appear to be:
Elizabeth 21 Feb 1768 Hursley
Richard  28 Sep 1769 Wickham
Thomas 14 Apr 1771 Wickham

Griffin Browning baptised 10 May 1772 in Sparsholt, parents William & Rachel.

Nell

There's a marriage of a Griffin Bruning (sic) and Mary Dawkins in Bishopstoke (not too far from Hursley and Twyford) on 14 Sep 1767.

So we have two Griffins of similar age by the look of it.

Another possible child of Griffin and Mary: Mary Broning / Braning bapt 15 Aug 1773 in Fareham d/o Griffin and Mary.
FindMyPast has image, the "o" / "a" in the surname has been obviously changed, which way is not clear.

Griffin Browning baptised 10 May 1772 in Sparsholt, parents William & Rachel.

Nell

There is a William baptised in Twyford on 30 Jan 1756 s/o Griffin and Martha, but seems a little young to have fathered a child by 1772, unless William wasn't an infant when baptised.
Throws another Griffin marriage into the puzzle.

Thanks for the reply Nell. I only have   Nanny Soper's will, that led to the marriage record. It would be good to know Elizabeth Browning née. Soper's death, if visable.

Geoff

It is possible that Elizabeth died following the birth of her last child.  There is a burial in Hursley for Elizabeth Browning 22 Feb 1786.  No other information available to me at the moment.  It is also likely that the baby Sarah was either sickly or failed to thrive.  A Sarah Browning was buried 21 April 1786.

A Griffith Browning was buried in Hursley 2 April 1801.  Again I can't provide any further details.  Sight of the original parish record may produce more.

The first Thomas on the list above was buried 6 July 1769.

Thanks for looking Nell, Seems a tough life for women & babies. I've added it to the Nanny Soper's record. Geoff
