On the 1841 he's residing @ Cumathinton, Wetherall, Cumberland, England

I suspect he was born earlier than 1816.  He is 25 in 1841 but ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.  He could have been between 25-29

Appears to have married pre-1837 as eldest child is 7

N.B. Age 25 on 1841 census suggests a birth 1811-16.

EDIT: He married Elizabeth COULTHARD in 1834.

Although he was living in Wetheral in 1841 - that doesn't necessarily mean he was born there.  The IGI entry for his marriage shows it in Carlisle

Thanks CaroleW  - I did spot the IGI entry.... but hadn't considered the implications you have now pointed out....seems strange though...to move that far (for the times)...
