Hunting for James Reid in 1861 I looked up his son, William, in the hope that they would be together. However, was he with his mother in 104, Parkers Court, King Street, Glasgow Calton, Lanarkshire?
This could be William:  15, cotton yarn darner, born Edinburgh;
Mary, his mother, was 55, formerly a domestic servant, born Saltoun, Haddington;

I see there is a David Reid, living at 14 High Street A Close, Inveresk, Midlothian. He was 30, a Currier and born Inveresk. His wife, Jane, 34, a currier's wife, born Cupar, Fifeshire and children, James 9, John 3, Agnes 9mos, all born Inveresk. Perhaps this was the  son who was in the 1841 census.
I can't find your James though. Certainly not as a Currier and born Inveresk. On his death certificate does it say that his occupation was a Currier still?
Sorry if I am way out with these.

Hi excel,
Yes that`s the same David as in the earlier census. I`m not quite sure about the 1861 census you`ve turned up though. Mary certainly was born in Saltoun and William`s age is right but in 1871 William is in Inveresk and married and is a cab driver and Mary is living with him. On James death certificate he is described as pauper formerly currier. Another odd thing is the fact that I can`t find another son Thomas Campbell Reid born 1840 Inveresk but in 1865 he was married in Govan. I wonder if they all lived in the Glasgow area in 1861

Here is Thomas in 1861 and in Govan! You will see why it didn't come up with Thomas Reid!
He was living with a Docharty family at 13 Albert St., Govan, Lanarkshire;
Thoms C. Reid, 21, born Musselburgh; Lodger; Occup: Riviter.
It looks as though the family may have moved through to Lanarkshire for some reason. Intriguing!

I think this could be one that you leave and come back to over time!
There are one or two James Reid's on their own but with nothing to link them to the family.
Good luck.
