Armagh Marriage 1844
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 16:04 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to bridge the gap betwen Scotland and Ireland.
I have a record from a Scottish birth certificate that parents Alexander Tait & Mary Connelly/Connally were married (19th Dec 1844 Armagh)
Any help as to where I can obtain details would be appreciated.
TIA,
Bill.

You will need to find a church record of the marriage (if the record exists). Civil registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland started in 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the prompt response.  I believe that the family were Presbyterian. Any advice as to where I might go next.

Armagh could be either the city or the county and there are quite a few Presbyterian Churches.

Hi Bill,  You have probably thought of the following , but just in case  ;)

1. Do you have all the childrens birth certs of Alexander and Mary? Especially the ones after 1861, where it tells where the parents married. (The IGI gives quite a few births after 1861 to this couple.)

The reason I ask, is that sometimes, depending on circumstances , the informant may be more precise on some certs than others.  If all childrens birth certs say parents were married Armagh, I'd be inclined to think it was the Parish/City rather than County.  However that is only an opinion.

2. Griffiths Valuation.   This survey was carried out in Armagh abt 1864, so I think its possible that Joseph, the father of Alexander, may still have been alive.  See previous thread.

I can see only one Joseph Tate/Tait in Armagh and he's staying in  in Navan, Parish of Eglish. (Next door to Armagh Parish and City.)

Modern map to show proximity of Navan to Armagh.

This link may be useful for Armagh churches and the dates available for records

Have you also checked PRONI for the Freeholders search, plus proximity of Curry(ie) at any of placenames mentioned?

Added-- I see nothing on Armagh Ancestry (i.e. same year of marriage) for a Joseph Tait/Tate/ -Currie(y) wedding, though I do see a marriage for a Joseph Tate 1810 which would fit  re-dates.  BUT I don't know who he married

I have checked Birth certificates for later children; all indicate 19th December 1844 Armagh.
Upon checking Death certificates it would appear that Alexander's father was Francis Tait (Linen weaver) and not Joseph.
I was under the impression that the family were Presbyterian however one of Alexander's daughter Lucinda was married in accordance with rites of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
Researching is good fun, isnt it!
I shall follow up with whatever info I have gleaned after the Christmas holiday.
Good night and God bless.
Bill.
