Bradford, Brighouse and Halifax Records Look Ups
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 22:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi Colleen,

Thanks for your kind offer of look-ups in the Halifax area.

Please would you look up a baptism for Thomas James Hargreaves/Hargraves/Hargrave/Hargreave.

The details I have from the 1851 census are........born c.1782 in Bailiff Bridge.

Also his marriage, wife's name Mary born Southowram, their 1st child was born c.1803, the igi has a probable marriage at St John's Halifax, 29th Nov 1802, brides name Mary Armistead, I am hoping the parish register has some extra info, maybe an occupation, witnesses, or an address.

Many thanks for your time.

Libby

Hello

These marriage registers have little info on them pre 1837 and maybe a trade or witnesses.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hi Libby,
It's possible if you can get a lookup of the marriage reg of St John's HX that there could be some little bits of info... such as whether or not bride & groom signed their names or made their mark, where[town/area] each  of them lived at the time of the marriage & the names of the witnesses.

Re the witnesses, it is a good idea if you can ask anyone who offers a lookup to check if the witnesses have signed other marriages on the register close by "your" entry- that would tell you that that witness was a parish clerk or official and save you chasing off after the person.  On the other hand you can get a witness with the same surname as bride or groom and then you have a relative.

let us know how you get on with this please :D

Hello again.

Yes I agree with Charlotte here! that if one is lucky a witness could be related to help identify people and  but often there were resident witness. The parish is often the best clue as St John had sub parishs Ie Ovenden-Lightcliffe-Southowram- Illingworth.

Hi Libby

As topic reguest!

Thomas Hargreaves was baptized in 1786 of John (John of Lightcliffe -Bailiff bridge)

Their (Tom & Mary) marriage was actually 29-12- 1805

Both marked x or signed X

Both of Southow parish (Southowram)

Witnesses Thomas Drives
                  and Thomas Smith
Both not in witness entries in the near Marriages
