Olive* or not, she is saying DoB 1850, PoB, Taunton - so 3 major diffns from earlier ... and Francis / Hugo POB, not uncommon to change like that ....

could you see any of them in 1901 ?

In terms of original transcription, its deffo an O, not an A - compared with others on the page - now, whether the Enumerator copied it incorrectly from the Schedule will never be known  :(

Hi

Odd I cannot locate that RG9/1440 image via any search for Crabb's on GR ...

I have emailed a complaint to Genes Re-united about not being able to get that record! using any of the people
in that record simply does not pull it up ... hmmm .... does not fill me with confidence ...

EVEN FREECEN FINDS IT ...

I have Eliza Hawkins living with Kate Fletcher in the 1901 ...

Eliza Hawkins  Head Married 52 Husband Pensioner b Somerset Taunton

I guess since she says Taunton again, I thin kwe go with some form of transcription error along the way, and that Olive is in fact our Eliza!

So, where was Hugo Francis?

Charles was at sea at this time ...

I believe they got married after their first child was born .. usual thing ... not enough time between you know what and going off to war and getting married! No parents witnessed the marriage ...

Kate is down as daughter.

oh oh ... looking at birth records it all goes wrong!

I know Kate Hawkins mother WAS Elizabeth Anne Crabb from her BC.

We have this Samuel+Sarah with dau Elizabeth 18 in 1861 ... therefore b.1843

The marriage of Sam+Sarah is also 1843, so make sense so far ...

But, The Elizabeth born in Exeter in 1843 is Elizabeth SUSANNA Crabb

There is an Elizabeth Anne Crabb born Exeter in 1850 ...

But this Elizabeth does not square with the Sam+Sarah family ...

Back to the drawing board I think ...

So... what about  ... RG9/1398 St David ... Exeter
259, High Street.

Thomas 43
Caroline Hyne 45
..
..
Elizabeth Ann 11
..
..

Right age and also right middle name ... perhaps a better bet ... But astill does not
explain how come she got married to a sailor in Plymouth at the age of 12!

But, following this lot in the census ... we find Elizabeth Ann Crabb 21 in 1871 still at
home and a "governess".  Thomas + Caroline married in Kingsbridge 1844 which is quite
odd as well ...

So this does not fit with the Elizabeth Ann who married Hugo!

So, was it a Bridport lass? Off to check these folk to see if  Elizabeth Ann was born Exeter/Taunton ...

That is the only one i can find to however That Elizabeth Ann is still with her parents in 1871 and not married. Are you sure the marriage in 1862 is correct have you got the marriage cert ?
As it was said earlier its a big gap from1862 to their first child in 1871.

Thanks so far ...

Just checked the Eliza and Elizabeth Crabbs in 1861 for some one of the right age ...

The only one to "fit" would have been born Cornwall, in Plymouth, age 19.  But wrong
birth place.

Still waiting for the MC.

I have been trying to trace the movements of the HMS Himalaya around that time. It was
a very active troopship as well as taking people to NZ, Oz, Canada, SA etc ... so Hugo may
have been away at sea for quite some time (possibly years before coming into port to see
his wife!).

I guess once I have the MC, we should get a better clue on the above searching ... but even so, it
does look very odd ...

The marriage looks right, it's in freebmd, and also in the original records ... so until I get it, we won't
know a great deal more ... Eliza's details hopefully will clear it up ... ho ho ...

LOL  :) , thats what makes this lark interesting Rob !

so we've seen Mrs H on census with DoBs of 1844 and 1850 .... names of Eliza, Elizabeth and 'Olive' .... PoBs of Exeter & Taunton

so how about this !

1871 - RG10/1146; Folio: 81; Page: 5; - Portsea Island district
25, Sydenham Terrace

Frances Hawkins 27 Married Head Wife of Seaman abroad born Devon, Taunton
Percival Hawkins 8  son born Devon, Plymouth

Maybe she wrote Francis as Head on the schedule, then changed it to be her age etc, and the lad is born right after that marriage, and in Plymouth ...

Cant wait to see that Marriage Cert !

Added: cant see them with same PoBs etc in 1881, altho there is a Percy / Frances combo in the east end, but with kids who also should have been on the 1871, so doubtful but ....

This all looks even more interesting ...

But, if you dive over to the Hampshire section, I have found with LN's help !

Francis Hawkins was born 4 June 1842, Donaghadee, Co. Down.

I got his service record from the NA, and he was indeed a RN cook, and served on
various ships, including the Himalaya when Kate was born (which it says on her BC!)

So, it's all falling into place ...

25 Sydenham terrace is a very GOOD address! I discounted this Frances, but it now starts
to make sense again!

Good fun this one eh?

Thanks,

and do peek in ther Hampshire section!

Off to fire one at the Co. Down people ... watch this space!
