Very tricky... Baptism lookup, Walter JONES
« on: Monday 15 December 08 14:56 GMT (UK) »
This one is going to be difficult :(

One of my ancestors, bless him, was Walter JONES. Unfortunately, said Walter does not want to let me know his pedigree. According to the census, he was born anywhere between 1805 and 1821 in Mydrim (possibly Llanwinio, but most likely Mydrim) civil parish Llanfihangel Abercowin (incompasses St Clears and Carmarthen) Carmarthenshire, Wales. His father, according to his marriage certificate, was Theophilus JONES, a labourer. I know nothing else about Theophilus.

Since it is before the start of birth certificates, perhaps the only way of finding him is baptism/christening? His descendants became Wesleyan Methodists, but I don't know about him.

If it helps- the censuses:

1841, living in Llanwinio, dob 1811, married to Anne c1797
1851, Llanwinio, dob 1805, still married to Anne
1861, Llanwinio, dob 1811, widower.
1871, Llanwinio, 1813, married to Elizabeth GRIFFITHS c1826
1881, Llanwinio, 1821, still married
1886, died in Llanwinio, dob from age 1808, marriage status unknown.

If it helps, his first born daughter (by Anne) was called Mary and she herself had an illegitimate daughter called Esther. His children by Elizabeth were Theophilus, Anne and Anne.

I can't find him anywhere and I'm right over the east side of England, so I can't get to Carmarthenshire myself for a look up. I thought I couldn't lose anything by asking if anyone could help with this tricky beggar.

Thanks x

 My father tells me;

My Register of available Parish Registers tells me that  the Llanfihangel Abercywyn records of Christenings 1759 to 1812 are apparently lost. Also that those for 1813 onwards are with the incumbent  Copies of Bishops Transcripts 1803-1804 and 1806-1841 with the NLW Aberystwyth. That said I will check to see if things have changed.

I'm gobsmacked- I thought it might take hours to scour through the records! When you said that period was lost, I thought it was just my luck... and I'm so happy that you checked for me. You are brilliant, Welsh Lady too :D

Wow :D

By the way, are those archives online? Or available to buy or anything?  :)

My reference to lost data related to Llanfihangel Abercywyn. Records for Meidrim available for 1653-1921 (Christenings); 1653-1971 (Marriages) and 1653 - 1882 (Burials) and probably later.

The Meidrim registers have been transcribed making examination much less time consuming.

Dyfed FHS and Carmarthenshire FHS have a lot of on-line data, some free and some by subscription and I suggest those two web sites should be the first port of call.

I'm sure you know that post 1837 BMD's are indexed on both Rootsweb and Ancestry. Census Returns by County are available for purchase through Carmarthenshire FHS.
