Thanks all for looking.  This may be George although Annan is not very close to Durisdeer.  Is it possible that the death would not be recorded as late as 1866?

It's unlikely - I think a cert was needed for burial. It could be that the writing on the cert is indecipherable and has therefore not been indexed  :-\

Just an idea - can you find another 1866 death in Johnstone and skip back to the start of January/February where hopefully George's entry is? As Gadget says, it may be badly indexed or not indexed at all.
