Bank St, RUABON
« on: Saturday 20 December 08 09:58 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where Bank St Ruabon is or was. I've traced my Ancestor Edward Jarvis there in 1881. I have also found on the 1871 census the same but living at an Australia Arms Ruabon [BankSt?]. Was there an Australia Arms in Ruabon or is this the one in Trevor?

I also can not find Edward Jarvis before 1871.

First of all a very warm welcome to Rootschat.I seem  to recall looking for this Edward on some Message Board before now.Whilst I am not entirely familliar with Ponciau, especially at that time!I can only offer that after looking at the Census Entries, there must have been a Public House called the Australia Arms in Bank Street Ponciau in addition to the one you mentioned in Trevor. As with you I could not find Edward in 1861,though I would say that he is almost certainly the one given in 1851 as the son of a Thomas and Ann Jarvis living in Moreton Above Ruabon. The address is merely given as "Rhos".HO107/2503/367/59.

It sounds likely that it was on the corner of Australia Street and Bank Street. My gt grandfather died  Australia Street in 1892.

Merry Cristmas everyone :)

Yes I'm told that the Pub was in fact opened by Edward Jarvis and so named as he had previously been in Australia but returned to Ponciau.I'm  further told that the Pub was in a narrow alleyway between Bank St and South Lane.

Hi All,
So is it possible that Australia Street was also named after Edward Javis?  :)
