According to Wikipedia there were at one time 150 pubs in Rhos & Panciau :o   Just about every house in the village I would think :D

Merry Christmas to all ;)

Heather - and there was I brought up to think everyone in the Rhos and Ponciau were t-totaller Reckobites.

My Methodist great grandfather, who did do some preaching there at times, started a 'bottle club' where people would put the amount they would have spent on alcohol into his club. I think they used it for children's outings or to help someone in need. I can't tell properly but there is a full listing of each person's weekly contribution in the back of his diary.

Hi Gadget

It's no wonder they all ended up signing the pledge ;D

What a wonderful memento your great grandfather's diary must be.   My Carrington great grandfather gave up part of his land for the Gwynfryn chapel so I reckon he must have been a naughty boy in his "yuff" ;)

All the best
Heather

Hi Heather and Gadget,

My gt grandfather was a Wesleyan preacher and ended his religious career as lay agent at Rhos chapel.

How wonderful it must be to have your gt grandfathers diary. :)

The teetotal thing did not continue down the family :o  ;D ;)

Lynn

Not sure about William ;)  Judging by the response below he seems awfully familiar with the history of the Australia Arms ;D ;D  However they say there is no one more righteous than a reformed sinner  8)

Yes I'm told that the Pub was in fact opened by Edward Jarvis and so named as he had previously been in Australia but returned to Ponciau.I'm  further told that the Pub was in a narrow alleyway between Bank St and South Lane.
