voters list 1919/1924
« on: Saturday 20 December 08 17:41 GMT (UK) »
my dad was in the army between these dates (trying to find Reg. etc)  He was born 1901 so could he be on absent voters list when he was 21? Also trying to trace where his  mother was living (I hope it was same address as when my parents married  1924,  dad out of army then.  If his mother was at this address could I find her from 1918 when women got the vote she was possibly a widow but over 30. In 1924 dad was is Islington London  But born in Hackney so don't know when they moved.
Thank you  2mm

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think in the 1910s/20s a man had to be in his mid-20s to vote.

I tried to find my G Grandfather on absent voters lists - he was born in 1896, and was told he would not be on there.

Thanks for the  info Comosus  just took it for granted it was 21. I will have to do some digging about the age. So I may be wrong about his mother and being 30 + for a woman.  Unsure when she died thought voters list may help me with a date.  Thanks anyway

All men over 21 (+ women over 30) got the vote in 1918 ;)

Most of these old registers aren't indexed so you will probably need a good idea of an address - often local street directories showing heads of household can be a shortcut where they survive.

casalguidi thanks for reply.  Can you give any more information re the  Street Directories?  How/where would I start to look for these.   The address I am hoping to find was in Islington

Thank you  2mm   8)

Hi 2mm

I would suggest contacting Islington Local History Centre http://www.islington.gov.uk/education/LocalHistory/localhistorycentre/

Here is some idea of what they have http://www.islington.gov.uk/education/LocalHistory/localhistorycentre/Whats_available.asp and http://www.familia.org.uk/services/london/islington.html

It appears thy may be lacking local street directories post 1905 but they may have some idea if anything survives elsewhere.
