Thank you so much for this help. I feel sure this is the right family. It is very interesting to us.
Please can you tell me does the 1891 census indicate how old is Jessie's father William  that year? Also is there any way of checking how long the 3 brothers lived and whether they had any children.
Since at least 2 of the children were not spoken about by Jessie they could have died young or emigrated.
I am very interested in her mother Catherine Gowans and wonder if it is more helpful for me to start a new Scottish thread relating to her. I see there is a working 13 year old Catherine Gowans in Midlothian in 1861 and wonder if it is she.

I can't access the full info, but it appears William Gardner is born about 1849 in London. I wonder why they can't be spotted in 1881?

There is also married in Pancras a Jessie Gowans in 1867.  I think she may have married Henry George Kemp - there's a Jessie Kemp, 33, b. Scotland, with husband Henry, 28, a butcher, in Dartford, Kent, in 1871.  They have a 3 year old son (Henry?) and a daughter Martha.

In 1881 they are in Stone In Dartford but Jessie has been indexed as "June".

I think it would be worth getting the marriage certificate, but in the meantime you could see if anyone can find Catherine and Jessie together, perhaps in the 1851 census.  It's difficult to find the brothers because the name is relatively common and their first names are as well.

I think Catherine might have died in 1898 in Pancras, listed as aged 49. (freebmd again).

Thanks again for this help. I see the problem with tracking brothers William, John and Thomas Gardner in London. I tried putting a query about Catherine and Jessie on the Scottish board, but have had no replies so far. Gowans seems to be fairly rare-even in Scotland.
I will order the 1871 marriage certificate of Catherine Gowans and William Gardner if this seems necessary to follow this through and report back.

The 1871 marriage certificate shows that William Gardner aged 26, painter of 10, College Grove, whose father was William Gardner, Plumber (deceased)  married Catherine Gowans aged 23 in the Parish Church, London Town on Aug 16th 1871.
Catherine Gowans is listed as aged 23, resident of 53, Woburn Place, St Georges Bloomsbury. Her father's name is given as Charles Gowans , Engineer (deceased). The witness is Maria Stonehouse. Presumably she is a friend.

I also spotted from the 1901 census that Catherine's daughter Jessie (aged 20) is staying with her 29 year old brother William ( and his wife Emily)
at 42 Victoria Road. This address is very close to that which I know family members were living 20 years later.

I am still very uncertain about the earlier life of Catherine. A suggestion from the censuses was made that she was staying at a Gowans home in 17 Holmhead Street, Lanarkshire but had been born in the Cannongate. There are a number of Gowan children at that address including a Charles who is a little older than Catherene ( note different spelling).

Thank you for this. It is really useful and interesting. It is quite a bit to suddenly take in.
Oddly enough, the Catherine Gowans has proved elusive to track backwards in spite of her having a less common surname.
