Hi Jane

i have had a really good look around but i couldn't find Grindley Brook in the Whitchurch area for the shropshire 1851 census - could it perhaps have been in Cheshire or Flintshire for the census??
Couldn't find the family in Whitchurch or other surrounding towns either
sorry

Hello Jane & Tara,

I managed to find Grindley Brook on the PRO website.searching their catalogues.

It can be found in HO107/1995 Wem, subdistrict Whitchurch, parish Whitchurch, Hamlet Grindley Brook. It is were Hinton & chinnel are to be found.

Having said all that, I was unable to find the Elliot's.

I also searched Black park and Holyhurst.

Sorry I could not be of any help.

Hi Linda

What is the address of this PRO website you are talking about – sounds like it might come in handy when I am trying to find some of these small villages.
I searched all of the parish of Whitchurch but never saw any mention of Grindley Brook so wasn't saw it was there?

Cheers

Hello Tara,

The PRO stands for Public Record Office, although I believe they have changed their name to the National Archives. They are situated in Kew in London and are the national repository.

They have a catalogue on line called PROCAT. You can search these pages for their holdings. One useful use of this is that if you go to the search page below:

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp

type in the village in the box labelled word or phrase, in the year range type 1851 to 1851 & in the Department box type HO it will return with the results of all the census pieces for that area.

Some of them will be for villages of the same name in other counties, but the ones for Shropshire will be HO 107/ the in the range of 1982 to 1998.

I have found this to be incredibly useful.

Also if you are having difficulty finding a place in Shropshire GENUKI has a page in the towns and parishes section relating to Shropshire called where is it? which will sometimes find things for you.

Good luck! :)
