BETWINED ??
« on: Tuesday 08 February 05 01:06 GMT (UK) »
In 1871 census RG 10 175 page 66 refers to Marylebone Dorset Square Ward.
That page is very unclear but the street I am pretty certain is 'Boston Place'.
The family that I am interested in are the 4th and 5th entry from the bottom of the page ........... named WOOD.
What is their address ? .............. what I see is a word that looks like 'Betwined' ............... and this peculiar word appears on adjacent pages.
Any thoughts ??

Hi Joboy

What you are seeing is the word "returned".  If you look to the left, you will see a census schedule number ie. the number of the form that the enumerator gave out and that was obviously returned uncompleted.  If you look at some of the entries - this is written next to a husband or wife - they wouldn't have had a form each.  Make sense?

It is more usual for a space to be left for returned forms - not to be written against somebody elses entry.  Blame the enumerator!

Best wishes
