Marriage lookup of James RIBBANS & Bathsheba CATT -Ipswich St.Matthew
« on: Saturday 27 December 08 23:47 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please help me out by looking at the marriage entry for James Ribbans to Bathsheba Catt on 22.9.1751 at St,Matthews, Ipswich.
I have never been able to find out where either were born/bapt so i'm hoping there is some additional
entries which may indicate where they came from. I suspect that Ipswich is Bathsheba's home town
but James ????
I believe James was the son of Samuel Ribbans & Hannah but again cannot find any trace of them either.
Seasons greeting to all

Alan

Hi Alan

Sadly this marriage pre-dates the Hardwicke Marriage Act of 1753. After the act came into force, there was much more information given in church records, including the last parish of settlement, though this would not necessarily have been the parish of birth.

Before this date usually only the names of the couple and the date of the marriage would be given.  Sometimes a helpful cleric might include some extra details, though this is rare in my experience.

Here's hoping!
Rick :)

Hi Rick,
Many thanks for your reply.

I wasn't aware of that act or though I did know that it was only the names
of the couple getting married that were listed.

I was just hoping, but,  alas it doesn't seem that my request is bearing much
info!!

I estimated the birth years for James and Bathsheba and looked at the Ipswich St Matthew baptisms 1726-1740 to see if they might have been baptised in this parish, but unfortunately could not see either of them.

Regards
Anne

Taken from Ipswich St Matthew marriages:

James Ribbons singleman and Bathsheba Catt singlewoman both of St Matthews Parish were married by banns September 22nd 1751

No mention of any other parishes or anything.  Sorry.

Anne

Hi,

I am also a decendent of James Ribbans and Bathsheba Catt. I found some information that clears up where she was from. She was Ashkenazi Jewish.

Bathsheba Catt's real name was in fact Batsheba (Bathsheva) Katz - born in Belarus in 1720. She moved to Ipswich to escape the Anti-Semitism in the area. Her last known residence before Ipswich was Hlybokaye, Belarus.

This was found on the JewishGen Yizkor Necrology index. https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/jgdetail_2.php
