Paul BADCOCK birth
« on: Monday 29 December 08 02:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello I am looking for any information on Paul BADCOCK b 1824 Berkshire d 19.7.1900 Exeter South Australia. Paul was a wheat buyer and made at least 2 trips to Australia , first { that I know of } in 1843 and then after marrying his wife Sarah Ann TEAKLE in Adelaide in 1844 and having a daughter Amelia Hope BADCOCK in 1844, went back to England and returned to settle in Australia in 1849.
I am looking for his birthdate, christening, parents and /or siblings.
I would be grateful for any help or suggestions.
Thank you
Alison

Hello Alison

There is a Paul Badcock listed on the IGI who appears to be 'yours'.  It is there suggested that he was born in Abingdon, and was the son of Richard and Edith.  Also listed are the details of another researcher in Oz who is loooking at this line.  Have you seen the reference?

I have had a look at the Abingdon PRs - albeit very quickly - and can find plenty of Badcocks but no birth of a Paul Badcock.  Or do you have any other clues as to where in Berkshire Paul might have been born?

Thanks KN. Yes I have seen the IGI and saw the parents as Richard and Edith but I want to triple check everything these days { have gone on some wild goose chases in the past} It may be me that you are referring to looking for Paul Badcock. I think I have posted every where looking for substantiated facts. I have no more information other than what I gave which came from Immigration information in South Australia.  I have not been bale to find anything on Richard and Edith Badcock in Berkshire maybe you can ??Thank you for your help

Hi Alison

I have found what could be the marriage of Richard and Edith:

May 19, 1818 at Eynsham (a village over the Thames into Oxfordshire, near Witney),

Badcock, Richard, b, to Parker, Edith, sp, by licence, St Helens Abingdon, witnesses Christianna Parker, Jas Parker, Mary Badcock.

From the way the information is laid out on the page it looks like Richard comes from St Helens.

I have checked the St Helens, Abingdon PRs again.  There are many Badcocks listed, including three Richards in the baptism records - all rather too early I presume for this one, in 1723,1743 & 1749.

Also the later baptism records that might have contained Paul are not yet transcribed, ending in 1812.  So I don't know how we might get access to them.

Anyone any ideas?  Are the originals available for viewing ever?

Hi Alison

This has been bugging me overnight, so had another look at the Abingdon PRs.  The CD is not quite as straight forward as other parish registers and I found a section "unchecked" in which is a list of other bmds that are obviously not as far through the transcription process as others but luckily still able to be published.

St Helens PRs
28 May 1819, baptism, Joses, Richard & Edith
31 Jan 1821 baptism, Christianna, Richard & Edith, mercer, born 20 Nov 1820
15 July 1822 baptism, Richard, Richard & Edith
9 Dec 1823 baptism, James, Richard & Edith, born 21 July
9 Feb 1825, baptism, Paul,  son of Richard & Edith.
30 Jun 1826 baptism Elizabeth, Richard & Edith
20 Aug 1829 baptism, John, Richard & Edith
11 Jan 1831 baptism, George Alfred, Richard & Edith
11 July 1833 baptism of Edith Badcock, daughter of Richard and Edith
16 July 1833, burial of Edith Badcock aged 35.
24 Dec 1845, burial of Richard Badcock, Shippon Rd Cott, draper and Governor of Christ's Hospital

1841 census
Richard Badcock, 45, listed in St Helens parish of Abingdon, draper, with Joses Badcock 21, draper, Edith Badcock, 7.  All born in county.

Pane Badcock, aged 15 (rounded down to nearest 5 in 41 census) listed in Suffolk as a draper in the household of Edward Corder also a draper, not born in county.  If you look at the original it looks like Pane is a mistranscription of Paul.
