Julia Kehoe
« on: Monday 29 December 08 05:40 GMT (UK) »
Good evening,

Do you have access to the passenger lists for emigrants to Canada?  I'm trying to find my grandmother, Julia Kehoe, b Jan 15, 1887 in Seacombe, England.  Apparently, she travelled with her sister and I think they landed in Canada.  The sister ended up in California and married a Price and my grandmother Julia ended up in Saskatchewan and married Robert Martin.  I believe she came over to Canada in 1910 or 1911.  Her father may have been working on the ship that she travelled on.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks, Susan

I was just looking at a Price Family Genealogy site and they have Julia Kehoe's birthdate as February 16, 1884.  I've got Julia's passport from 1941 and she has listed her birthdate as Jan 15, 1887....hmm..maybe she was fibbing about her age on the passport??!!

Regards, Susan

Hi Susan,

I've found a Julia Kehoe on the passenger lists, you'll have to determine if she is yours:

Julia Kehoe, age 25, single, it looks like she's never been to Canada before, there is typed words British something Allowed, (I can't make out the 2nd word, maybe someone else can), born in England, racial origin is English, destination is Toronto Ontario, occupation was domestic in England, intends to do the same in Canada religion is RC. Date of arrival is June 23 1912 aboard the Tunisian. She doesn't seem to be traveling with a sister, unless the sister had a different surname than Julia.

Cordially, Lisa

You might also want to check the Toronto Directories. (search doesn't work too well when the books are so big, so it is sometimes better to download the pdf version) (large files, but worth the wait)

Thank you, Janice, for the links.

I didn't know how to find the city directories so appreciate that information.

I know that my Grandmother, Julia, was married to my grandfather, Robert Martin, by 1914 and they were living in Lytton, BC, where my father, George Martin was born in August 1914.

But I do think there was family from my mother's side in Toronto around 1914 so I will search for them in the directories.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards, Susan

I looked in the Toronto Star as well as the Globe and Mail, but could not find the marriage. If you need something looked up in the newspaper for your mother's side, just ask. I have access from my home computer.

The stamp on the passenger list, btw, will be "British Bonus Allowed" - the shipping companies got extra for booking the 'right sort' of emigrants on ships to Canada.

http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi
shows not one but two possibilities for her sister(s) - Agnes Price nee Kehoe, mother's maiden name Ward, b. 23 November 1899 and Kathleen Price nee Kehoe, mmn Ward, b. 31 March 1889.
