Henry Place
« on: Thursday 01 January 09 12:25 GMT (UK) »
My Family the Keane's lived in Henry Place in Dublin just off Henry Street, which was involved in the 1916 Easter uprising when the rebels vacated the GPO retreating up henry street turning into Henry place! Does anybody know if any photo's exist of Henry Place during that period or of any accounts from the residents of Henry place?

there's a webpage at this link (http://www.iol.ie/~dluby/1916.htm) which describes some members of the Rising retreating to a House in Henry place...

also mentioned here : http://www.irishtimes.com/focus/easterrising/friday/

much of the area around Henry Place was bady damaged - see the map
here : http://swilson.info/gen/Dublin1916/  (this scrolls & zooms like a Google map)

Thanx Shane,
My family were Residents of house number 2.4 in Henry Place (South & West & North) (North City, Dublin) it sounds like they were in the middle of a battle ground!
I visted Dublin in June & took a walk through Henry Place, I was surprised that the street had not been preserved, considering the history surrounding its part it played during the uprising.

That is really cool Shane.

By putting the 1916 map and Thoms 1884 together we can identify where every house was, name the lane on the 1916 map and see that 2.4 Henry place was one of the few buildings on Henry Place destroyed in 1916.

Nice one!

Unfortumately, the map does not seem to cover the block of buildings on Moore Street that the fugitives from the GPO tunnelled through to reach/form their temporary headquarters (numbers 12-26? Moore St).

In 1911, my grandmother was living at number 24.  Is it possible to find out if she was still there at the time of the Rising?  Are there directories or electoral rolls/poll-books that cover this period?

If so, where in Dublin could those be found? e.g. electoral rolls

For everything Dublin related, go upstairs in Pearse Street library.
