Peabody Building Waterloo Road, Lambeth
« on: Thursday 01 January 09 13:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can give me some info on Peabody Building, Waterloo Road, Lambeth. My grandfather was living in this building in 1879 with his parents and grandparents.

Regards Brenda

Hi

I just looked at my book about The A to Z Of Victorian London and Peabody Buildings, Waterloo Road was at the southern end of the street near St Georges Circus and Westminster Bridge Road. It was on the east side, a huge block of buildings.

My ancestors lived in that area in 1877.

Hi Shaun and Ben Coombs. Sorry I have taken so long to reply with a thank you but I have been at the hospital with my husband who needed some treatment.

Well, I went onto the web sites mentioned and got some great info and also a photo of the Peabody Buildings which was great. Also found a chat site with lots of other info.
Thank you so much both of you.

Regards Brenda

Hi

Glad that I could be of assistance. My ancestors lived in Evelyn Buildings, Holborn in the 1880s and they are similar to Peabody Buildings. On the whole, all such buildings built for the poor were the same in detail, such as two rooms for a tenement, communal kitchens, loos etc.
