Sorry Jacquie meant to say that that charles Cresswell probably isn't mine, 'mine 'was a coach builder on his attestation papers in 1914. Jo
I wouldn't completely discount it. He could have changed occupations but that would be a pretty big change if he did. I guess you'll have to wait until the 1911 census is released to find out for sure.

In every working-class neighbourhood in the Montreal area, these stairs are typical. And unique to Montreal.

The framework is iron, more pliable and durable than wood. Why outside? My guess would be that space and heat were at a premium in the winter. Also, summers in Montreal can be stinking hot and humid, so the balconies with the outside stairs are a nice place to sit.
