But who is my Gt Gramp,100 year secret?
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 17:23 GMT (UK) »
:-[ :-[Help, I have just found out that My Maternal Gramp George Giles son of John Robert GILES  and MARTHA[ nee Legg] born 3 months after the marriage was not John Robert,s bio offspring but the result of a liason between  "a son "of the" Big House" [Stanton House ] and the housemaid,[Martha]!! My Gt Gran.
Evidently the "word" has been passed down for nigh on 100years ,I, was only told that the father was "unknown" seemed  strange, all these years a  secret, now my only remaining Aunt, Gramps youngest daughter at 83 has "let on".
I would dearly love to find out who was living in the "BIG HOUSE" then but the parents may have shipped the culprit out!"
ps, Gramp was the ONLY village boy allowed to skate on the Big Lake 11 acres, seems something ,did go on, favourtism or ??.

Hi Allen,

What are the relevant dates - perhaps you can get some kind rootschat soul with the appropriate census access to do a lookup for the 'big house' for the approximate dates, that might give you some ideas.

Also, I've got an 'illegitimate' g-grandparent, we eventually figured out (with the help of some kind rootschat souls) that his father WAS actually the man who married his mother 3 years later, as most of his (the father's) siblings had given their children identical names to that of my g-grandfather - he had a very unusual middle name (Ethey), which helped!  So, hope for an unusual middle or first name and look for people in the vicinity with similar names...might help.

Sometimes PR's could have a clue about parentage, have you looked up his birth in the local PR?

Regards,

Patricia

Stanton House with lake is a Hotel now at Stanton Fitzwarren, near Swindon.
Am presuming this is the place to which you refer.
Have checked the 1871 and 1891 Census lists for the persons living in the house, but nothing matches your query am afraid.

There was as Ada Matilda J Legg born in the Oct Q 1879 in the Fordingbridge Dist, Hampshire, this could be the Ada aged 13 living with the family at the time of the 1891 census? Unable to find baby Ada, but Martha was a cook/domestic at Aldershot.

Sorry, discount Ada Matilda Legg :'(

At the time of the 1881 census John R Legg looks as if he was married to Bertha with three daughters, Alice, then aged 6, Amelia aged 3 and Ada aged 1. Bertha Legg died in the July Q 1881 and Amelia in 1883. At the time of the 1891 census Alice was staying with Stephen and Sushannah Legg and listed as Granddaughter.

It would be interesting to see if there is a kind person who could look up the marriage of John Giles and Martha Legg in 1881 to see if he was a widower, although this does not answer your question!

John Robert according to the 1891 census is 10 years older than Martha so it's a good thought  :)
