1881 census - Stanton house, Stanton Fitzwarren.

RG11  Piece / Folio     2014 / 129     Page Number     2

The Agar family are living there with loads of servants........

The head of the household was a Herbert Agar who's father appears to be James Charles Herbert Welbore Ellis Agar 3rd Earl of Normanton born Ireland.

Believe it or not the father is in a tree on Anc***try  :o

Oh and if I'm reading the census records correctly Herbert Agar was the brother-in-law of a Horatio Nelson  :o

hi

i also looked at the nelson connection (from the 1881) and  the niece lady mary katherine nelson's  parents were horatio nelson and mary jane diana agar.  apparently they lived in trafalgar house in wiltshire and he is descended from susannah nelson "the" horatio nelson's sister.  :D

Hi, I am the daughter of Trevor Giles ( Grandson of George Giles )

I have a copy of the 1881 cencus for Stanton House (assuming this is the house in question)  and and can not place martha as working there.  Just James Legg  (21) - Groom - Possibly Martha's Brother.

The Son of the house is only 8 years old -  So I would think highly unlikely to be the culprit.

However  2 of the others servents are called George.......

I have not long started tracing the Giles line, but have reached Georges grandfather who seems was also not a Giles...  As on his Marriage Certificate (1843) states his father name as Robert Kitchenor.

Look forward to hearing from you

Jo

Hi Jo

Interesting information. I'm sure Allen will be excited to hear from you.

I thought that Martha possibly called her son George because that was her father's name........if indeed her father was George Legg as I discovered from the tree on Ancestry. I can't prove it and am only recording it as a possible.

p.s. welcome to Rootschat  :D :D :D :D

Hi Allen and all involved. A big welcome to RootsChat to you too Jo.  :)

Martha LEGG b Dec 1/4 1855 Highworth 5a 3

No real help with the alleged secret but a little on Martha. Martha is in Hampshire in 1881. Still time for her to get back over the border (about 70 miles), get work in The Big House and fall pregnant, but she would really want to get a move on. (The 81 census was taken on the 3 April)

Aldershot

Martha LEGG servant 26 b Highworth Cook Domestic Servant

Home of Sarah MARTIN Widow 61 Deriving income from lands and her Children Frederick 24 Solicitor, Anna Jane 21 and Georgina 19

Looks like 1871 she is a servant in Highworth

RG10/1878 Folio 18 Page 11

Martha LEGG Servant 16 b Stratton General Servant Domestic

Home of William MURRAY Curate of South Marston and family

I don't see a baptism for Martha. There is a George and Jane who baptised a son James LEGGE 12 Oct 1852 Highworth. There is a marriage

George LEGGE = Jane BURCHELL Sep 1/4 1850 Swindon and C 8 545.

I can't see Martha or any of the family for that matter in 1861, nor can I see a likely family in the later censuses.

Cheers Kris  :)

:-*Dear kris  so many thanks to all of you who have now given me so much information on my Gramp George Giles, this all started when his youngest Grand daughter sent me family info from Cornwall. What has now happened is a two pronged approach, jojo is my first cousin Trevor ,s daughter and a Gt Grand daughter of George and----- does not know this is me!!!!!!! This means that Gramps lineage will benefit from his heir/heiress to double the effort.
From what you have posted kris ,now I have to look at the son of Martha,s employer at the time??? The verbal hand down may have meant the solicitors house!.
PM going to jojo next,
Allen.
