Dolman's Buildings Maidenhead Berkshire
« on: Sunday 04 January 09 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Do any old Maidonians have any knowledge of Dolman's Buildings, Maidenhead?  I have just been looking at the Berkshire Burial Index and came across this name several times in the late 1800's.  I would like to know where it was,
Regards,
Abiam

Hi Lesanne,
That's a good thought!  But in the Berkshire burial CD it is written many times as Dolmans unless of course the name adapted to Holman.  Shall do some googling.
Best wishes for the New Year and good luck with your Norris man!

Hi Abiam,

Dolman's Buildings were at the High Street end of King Street.  No longer there, although a Dolman's Lane existed right up to 1974.  I would think that the buildings were demolished when the dual carriageways were put in round the back of the High Street and bypassing King Street.

Little Nell and Lesanne,

Thank you for the info.  I did google and a found a family from W. Berkshire but nothing about Maidenhead.  I am still curious about it.  I went to school at the County Girl's which was very near the bottom of Castle Hill (1952 - '59) and I don't remember it or ever hearing about it.  And I thought we kids knew everywhere around there!  I know there was a lane that ran parallel with the high street called West street which used to be called Back Street.  I think I'll email the library and see if they have anything.

Unfortunately the link you sent Lesanne is not working,
Regards,
Abiam

West Street is still there - houses the United Reform Church, the telephone exchange and the Friends Meeting House.

In 1881, these buildings were recorded as Dorman's Buildings, even in the description of the enumeration district.  By 1891 it was Dolman's Buildings.  They would have been on the west side of the road.
