Bain family in East Lothian
« on: Monday 05 January 09 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Looking for info on James Bain . He married Isabella Reid on the 1st June 1811 ( 90% certain it's the right James Bain ) in Gladsmuir, East Lothian . They had two sons that I know of,William  born about 1811 in Haddington , and died 29th May 1872 in Fernieside, Liberton and James born 24 Jan 1812 in Gladsmuir . Any information on this family would be very welcome .

I had a look at this last week but didn't come up with anything positive and then ran out of time.
So far I haven't found James Bain with Isabella in the census returns. I don't suppose you have found their death certs?
Ideas:
1851 Pathhed Rd, Dysart, Fife
James Bain, 74, Head, Factor, born Tranent, Haddingtonshire
Alexander Bain, Son, 28, Father's name James; Land Stewart; born Dysart
Jean Frater, Servant
Nothing else shouts out at me I'm afraid. Hopefully someone else will have a look too.
What do you have on the sons? Anything that might give us a lead?

The 1841 Census doesn't help unfortunately Excel - still only father and son showing:

James Bain 65, factor, b. Scotland
Alexander Bains 15,
Margaret Gibson 30

Address: Park, Dysart

Mmmm...IGI have the following entry which could well be son Alexander from these two censuses:

ALEXANDER BAYNE  Birth: 23 JAN 1823/ Christening: 06 FEB 1823 Dysart, Fife
Parents:JAMES BAYNE and MARGARET THOMSON

So, either a second marriage to this James Bain or it's not the correct entry. There is an entry in the Wills & Testament section on SP:

James BAIN, 09/02/1856 (a death date?) residing at Dysart Gardens near Dysart Factor to Right Honorable Earl of Rosslyn at Cupar Sheriff Court   SC20/50/27

Luckydog, from the info you have for James Snr., what occupation shows for him?

From his marriage certificate James snr is recorded as being a labourer . On his sons death certificate he is recorded as being a ploughman . Son William is recorded as being a ploughman on his death certificate but on the relevant census returns he is recorded as being a coal carter . This occupation fits with where he was living , Fernieside , Liberton , Midlothian which is adjacent to the old coal workings at Gilmerton . Have yet to do any further research on son James .

Hi Mike and all,

A daughter shows for the couple on SP. The OPR reads:

"Bain

Georgina Somner [?] Seton Daughter to James Bain and Isable
Reid at Gilmerton was born 10th Janry and baptized 8th Febry
1824 Witnesses James McGlashan and Marion Gault"

Could this be her in 1841?

Address: Gilmerton, Liberton, Midlothian
Sarah Wilson, f, 24, labourer, b. in county
Seton Bain, f, 18, labourer, b. in county

I've found the death of a James Bain (former ploughman) aged 80 in 1863 at Gilmerton, parish of Liberton. That matches up in those details! The only thing is his wife was Janet Wallace. :-\ Previous spouses are not always mentioned (especially when the deaths are registered by the "second family", so to speak), so he could still be your man.

Parents were James Bain, carter (dec.) and Jane Bain m.s. Nicol (also dec.).

Added: James and Janet married 1832 in Liberton. That leaves a few years from Georgina's birth in 1823 to then - perhaps Isabella died between the dates?
