If you can hit the link http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=8296961&SearchInit=4&CATREF=BT+387%2F60&j=1 then hit "Request this" I would suggest you take the second option "Request Estimate" and follow instructions. You can then ask for the crew agreement for THYSVILLE for the period that you need. The Archives will email you back with an estimate to copy the files.

There may be nothing for this ship if she was not chartered by the British Government so bear that in mind if you get a negative reply. This file will list the crew of the ship which should include your grandfather. Also the ship's logbook should be there for each of the years 1939 - 1946. You may ask for that information.

Hugh

Two more blanks from TNA I'm afraid and no reply from St Lucia.

Now we come to the difficult bit.  A trip to Kew looks likely.

Paul

I have the records, my grandfather was also shipwrecked (the Duchess of Atholl Oct 1942) so I have ordered the survivors records and await them....

Hugh - do you know if it is possible to obtain merchant seamans records prior to 1941? I know that my grandfather was in the Merchant Navy before the war broke out and that he was taken ill and left in Singapore for a few months (that is how I remember the story!). I'd be interested in seeing if I could find anything else.

Thanks,

Karen

My Father was a crew member of the Duchess of Atholl when torpedoed 10/10/1942 he will be 90 on the 20th Dec 2010 I have been searching for information on the Captain at the time Harry  Moore
Dad lives in Glasgow The rest of our family are in Australia
