I should also mention that on the 1871 census both Elizabeth and Charles are unmarried.

an after thought Fanny aged 7 ,  she a Daughter of Elizabeths or the Stewarts
so maybe Elizabeth Mother was a Fanny ,
could be why nothing is showing

No the census definitely says Fanny Cameron and James Cameron.

The order on the census is a s follows:

Charles Stewart - Head - unmarried
Elizabeth Cameron - Lodger - unmarried
James Cameron - son
Fanny Cameron - daughter

added: It doesn't indicate a relationship between Elizabeth and Charles but one could be implied.

just a lodger...?!

I found Fanny's birth

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/individual_record.asp?recid=500193345272&lds=1&region=2&regionfriendly=&juris1=Scot&juris2=&juris3=&juris4=&regionfriendly=&juris1friendly=Scotland&juris2friendly=&juris3friendly=&juris4friendly=

 ;D

think they might have been hiding a few things from the enumerator

I think the mystery of who James's father was is all but solved.  But why they wre hiding the relationship, or why they didn't marry  - or even pretend they were, is another matter.  Why pose as a frowned on single mother rather than a married one?

mab - just thought, does Charles have an occupation?  It might help to  find a death or if he married. Charles Stewart is too common lol.
