Wheeler Builders Firm on Seven Sisters Road Tottenham
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 23:21 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,
I have hit a complete brick wall with this for the last few years and am hoping someone will be able to give me a little help.

My great grandfather whose surname was Wheeler owned a builders firm on seven sisters road in Tottenham, I dont know what my great grandfathers first name was and this is where I hoping someone could help.
My great grandmother was a Rawley by birth, I believe she may have been born in Edmonton, which is where my grandfather was born before my great grandmother married my great grandfather.

Really I am looking to go a bit further with my tree and because my grandfather was the black sheep of the family and didnt have anything to do with his parents this is the only information I have.

Regards

Hi Ben,
I,m sorry but all I know about my great grandmother is that her maiden surname was Rawley, I have no first name for her or date of birth and I believe that she was born in Edmonton.
She was an a single mum when she had my grandad who was born in 1915 ( Jack Reginald Rawley).

At some point she married Mr Wheeler, I dont know how old my grandfather was when his mum got married, or even if Mr Wheeler was my grandfathers natural father.

By 1939 my grandfather was known as John Reginald Rawley for reasons which I wont go into here, but it is why he was the black sheep of the family.

I have asked family members if they had any information but they dont (or if they do they are not saying).
The only thing I do know for definate is that my great grandfather Mr Wheeler owned a builders firm on seven sisters road Tottenham.

Hi,

Your grandfather's birth certificate will show the name of your gt.grandmother, which might help you to find her birth.

Jack  R Rawley   JunQ 1915   Edmonton  3a   1087  (Found on FreeBMD)

A copy can be ordered online at www.gro.gov.uk and the cost is £7.

Hi nanny jan,
Thank you,
Things look a bit more complicated now as on my grandads death certificate it gives his date of birth as 24th feb 1915, so I guess when he used the name John he also changed his date of birth ever so slightly to hide his real date of birth incase he was caught out.
I have looked on the free BMD and tried the two names and different dates, but it looks like the one you have found is the right one.
I will have to order the certificate and try and untangle the mess he left behind.

Hi Nettie,

Jack and John are often used by the same person; my grandfather was named John but everyone called him Jack.  ;)

Also you had 6 weeks to register a birth, so a baby born in February could have been registered in the April/May/June quarter; which could apply in this case.

Hi Nanny Jan,

I wasnt going to say why my grandad used two different first names, but what the heck the reason is because he was a bigamist, he married his first wife in 1936 and then married my grandmother in 1939 whilst he was still married to his first wife (who if I have the correct lady she passed away in 1945).
Infact if you look at the BMD for a certain year you will find my uncle from my grandads first marriage directly above my uncle from my grandads marriage to my grandmother.

Thats why my grandad was the black sheep of his family and why this is a bit complicated.

Hi Nanny Jan and Nettie,
I believe I can help some what.
I am researching my great grandfather who is the gentleman in which you are speaking.

He did marry his first wife (Amelia Roberts) in about 1936 and shortly after the wedding my grandmother was born. And yes my great grandmother did die in about 1945 when my grandmother was 8 years old.

My great uncle Les (my great grandmother's child) was born three months after great uncle John.

My great great grandmother's name incase you were still unable to obtain it is Florence known as "Florrie".

Mr Wheeler is not John "Jack" Reginald Rawley's biological father.

Also you talk about Edmonton- Actually to set the record straight. We assume the Florence was born in or near Tipperary Ireland as that is where my great grandfather was born. They moved to the Tottenham Court road area of Tottenham some time in the mid 1930's.
The only members of the family to have ever lived in Edmonton are my Grandmother (John "Jack" Rawley's first child) her husband (my Grandfather) and their only child my mother.

Any other information you have that can be provided would be wonderful. I look forward to hearing from either of you

Kind regards ParatooperJack
John "Jack" Reginald Rawley

Hello Paratrooper Jack,

I am Jacks eldest grandaughter by his second marriage.
I am assuming that when you say your grandmother and grandfather you mean Aunt Kath and Uncle Ron and that your mum is Karon?
Grandad had 5 children with my grandmother, one who passed away when she was a baby, my mother passed away 12 years ago.
Can you email privately through this website.
