Completed Louisa Karron
« on: Friday 09 January 09 16:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  can anyone help me trace the ancestry of this person, my maternal grandmother's mother?   She married Richard J Ordish in Lancashire around 1900.  There seem to be a few variant spellings of her surname eg Karran, Carron.  It's known that her family were from the Isle of Man, and probably connected with potato crisp manufacture.

Thanks

Hi Karenlil and a warm welcome to Rootschat :)

As Louisa Ordish in Seaforth, Lancs in 1901, she's aged 23 and, as you say, her birthplace is Isle of Man.  Also in the household with Louisa, Richard and their children is a Robert S. Kerran, 16, "apprentice to painting (house)" b Isle of Man who appears to be Louisa's brother. 1901 census ref is RG13/3444/47/32.

Do I take it that you don't yet have Louisa & Richard's marriage certificate, which ought to identify Louisa's father's name and occupation?

Anna :)

There's a KARRAN family at 31 Cattle Market, Onchan, Isle of Man in 1891 with (among other children) a 14 yr old Louisa and a 6 yr old Robert, both born Douglas, who look like a good match.  Father is Robert, a 42 yr old cabinet maker b Douglas, and his wife is Margaret, 37 b Douglas. RG12/4688/114/15.

No indication as yet that they had anything to do with potato crisps, though!

Thank you so much, I didn't expect anything like such a swift and helpful response!  So far the only document I have is the birth certificate of Louisa and Richard Ordish's daughter Eileen Gladys, my grandmother.  So, I don't have Louisa's marriage cert., no....

Ah, my goodness, you've posted even more while I was typing this!  Brilliant!  Thanks! :)

The family was in England in 1881 (Barrow in Furness).  You can see a transcript of their census entry free on www.familysearch.org (search for Louisa Karran b 1876 Isle of Man and it will come up).

Before getting too carried away, I would urge you to obtain Louisa's marriage certificate to confirm this is the right family.  There don't seem to be other obvious candidates, but there's nothing worse than finding yourself on a wild-goose chase!

Thanks again, Anna,

I had looked at the 1881 census, but wasn't sure if the Louisa in Barrow in Furness was the right one.

I can't keep up with you!  Very impressive!  But I will check the marriage certificate to be sure, yes.

Must be the same family in Barrow as one of the children in the 1891 census return I mentioned above  - William E. aged 8 - has Barrow in Furness as his birthplace.

His birth reg from www.freebmd.org.uk:

William Edward KARRAN Dec 1882 Barrow F. 8e 820

So they obviously stuck around in Blighty for at least a year or two.
