Cardwell to canada?
« on: Sunday 11 January 09 18:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Seeking confirmation that John Cardwell b1848 Great Marton Blackpool Lancs is the same John Cardwell whose death is recorded as 4th August 1925 aged 77 York, Toronto, Ontario.  Father William and mother Elizabeth - aka Betty. (These facts fit).  The entry of death was literally stumbled upon through the lds family search site looking for one of his cousins!

The only reason I think this is one and the same is that i can not find a suitable death record in the UK from 1861 and he must surely have emmigrated.

I was wondering if SKS with more knowledge of Canadian immigration could have a look at passenger lists - my search to date has proved fruitless.

Many thanks

Mair

I did originally have this down as a possible but discounted it after a while as the information did not stack up well. It is still in the back of my mind.

There are a few more details on the actual image of the death registration such as he was a plasterer and the informant was his daughter, Mrs. Thos Hume. If you would like a copy of it, I can email it to you if you PM me your email address.

I found John and family on the 1901 census in Toronto.

John Cardwell, head, 24 Jul 1847, 53, born England, immigrated 1868, plasterer
Jane M Cardwell, wife, 15 Nov 1848, 52, born England
Wm Cardwell, son, 7 Aug 1874, 27, born Ontario, factory hand
John Cardwell, son, 22 May 1876, 24, born in Ontario, conductor
Henry Cardwell, son, 16 Oct 1878, 22, born in Ontario, piano mover (hard to read)
George Cardwell, son, 9 Apr 1881, 19, born in Ontario, conductor
Mary E Cardwell, daughter, 16 Jul 1888, 12, born in Ontario

Here's a link to the census entry at the free index:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/059c/
You can view the image at that site or directly at Library and Archives Canada but they have a lousy viewer (in my opinion) so it may be difficult to read.

From the 1891 census in Toronto:

John Cardwell, 43, born in England, parents born in England, plasterer
Maria J Cardwell, 42, born in England, parents born in England
William Cardwell, 16, born in Ontario, parents born in England
John Cardwell, 14, born in Ontario, parents born in England
Henry Cardwell, 12, born in Ontario, parents born in England
George Cardwell, 10, born in Ontario, parents born in England
Emma Cradwell, 7, born in Ontario, parents born in England
Mary E Cradwell 3, born in Ontario, parents born in England

I couldn't find them on the 1881 census but they should be in Guelph as George was born there just days after the census was to have been taken.

From the children's birth registrations that I found at Ancestry, their mother's name appears to have been Maria Jane Atkinson. William and Mary were born in Toronto but the others were born in Guelph.

Maria Jane Atkinson Cardwell died 18 Mar 1919 in Toronto. No parents are listed on her registration.

There is a family tree posted at Ancestry in the Public Member Trees section regarding John Cardwell and Maria Jane Atkinson. If you can't access that section of Ancestry then I would be happy to send a message to the tree owner on your behalf. If you would like me to make contact with the person, please send me your email address by PM.

Also if you would like a copy of the 1891 census image and/or the birth registrations of the children, please PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Many thanks for going to all that research for me.

The family names do match up.  I will keep searching to see if I can find his name on any passenger lists....that i think will prove one way or another if it is one and the same.  Co-incidence is so prevalent.

Thanks again

Just so you are aware, the family tree at Ancestry for John Cardwell and Maria Jane Atkinson does list William Cardwell and Elizabeth Pearson as John's parents. The tree owner may have information that I didn't have access to which makes the link more definitive.

Another son of William Cardwell (07 Feb 1813) and Betty Pearson (B: 13 Dec 1815) immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Albany, New York.  William Cardwell (B: 1837 in Little Marton)  married Catherine Griffin (B: 1832 in Ireland) and they had two daughters. Emma Frances and Elizabeth.
A descendant who lives in the U.S. is researching this line.  This William immigrated around 1860 and died in Albany in 1892.

Another child, daughter, Mary Jane who married a Kelly has descendant's who came to the U.S. in recent years.

My mother was a Cardwell and the 1848 John Cardwell was her grandfather.  The family knew he had come from Blackpool and was a cousin of the James who became the mayor.  Several relatives have visited Blackpool and I have obtained copies of the marriage, birth and death certificates to verify dates.

Welcome to roots!

Would the line you refer to be Harry Cardwell?

John Cardwell 1848 was 1st cousin to James Cardwell 1842-1903

Any information with regard to the immigration/emmigration would be good news!
