COMPLETED George Kerr Cabinet maker
« on: Wednesday 14 January 09 11:50 GMT (UK) »
I have the following folk on a cenus page, with no year on it. My fault.  ::)

It is headed Dumfries New Church District - the street is: Queensberry St, with Walkers and Young Close.

Can someone tell me where the residences are located, in Dumfries, please?

The people of interest are the Kerr folk: George 50 - cabinet maker; Elizabeth 20 - dressmaker; Janet 15 straw hat  maker and Christina 14.

Hi Jamjar

Queensberry Street is in Central Dumfries. Here's a map:

Thank you kindly, Gadget,

Do you know why it was called Dumfries New Church District?

It's the area of the parish  that central Dumfries came under. The 'landward'  part came under St Michael. There's a bit here under Church History:

Thanks again, Gadget,

I am now wondering what the 'New Church' was/is, religion wise.

I think it would be C of Scotland (Presbyterian) - it might be worth doing some Googling or contacting D & G FHS.

Thank you, Gadget

Just one more question. Do you know which year the census information is from? I have purchesed the image at some time and it doesn't have the year on the top, and I didn't name the file using the year. Very silly of me. :-\

I think it would be the 1841. I've done a check on SP and they come up with those ages on 1841. Have you tried Freecen to run a further check?
