Goldencraig tollbar, Kilwinning
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 22:13 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know where the above is. From what I can gather James SPEIR was living there at his death  (some time after 1825) he had farmed at Yonderhouses before that.
Many thanks

I don't know about the tollbar bit, but Goldencraig was a farm just slightly north east of Kilwinning.
Ayrshire:- Wilson, Donald, Pearson, Milligan, Wallace
Surrey:- Langford, Mullard, O'Neill
Special interest:- Loudoun parish

Many thanks.
I wonder if there was a toll rd there. Poss a house/cottage on the farm. I guess more research is needed.

I haven't checked it out but if you have a look in www.old-maps.co.uk for Kilwinning and patiently search,  it may be marked on it.  Most of the maps are are 1860 (ish).  Also  "Ayrshire Roots" have excellent info on Ayrshire towns, worth searching that site, and you maybe lucky to get other info you need as well.
