In 1861 Elizabeth is at Shawfield House Lodge with her children James, Robert, John, Elizabeth and Margaret. In 1871 she is at Finnart Coachman House along with her children James, Robert and Elizabeth. In Finnart Bothey is Henry McGie and two others ie not in the same dwelling so not sure why Ancestry has them listed at the same dwelling. I have downloaded the original documents

The marriage of Clark and Elizabeth reads

July 20 1828

Clark Machan & Elizabeth Altera both residing in College St in this parish , signified their purpose of marriage by Mar John Blair, Elder, and being thrice proclaimed they were married on the 9th Day of Aug 1828 Years, by Rev Jas Foote Mins

Wow so that is the same as the clip in reply 22
I'd never have read that as August .

Your husband and I are distant relatives thru  James Machan and Martha Clark

I'm descended thru their daughter " oops * Margaret  who married Walter MCFARLANE
..

26 matches to James Machan 1786

For some reason the 16  matches to daughter
Jean/Jane b 1789 are higher CM's to matches to her siblings (married name ARBUCKLE)

#There are 8 matches thru Andrew 1800. Top one has surname MACHAN

#1 match to Martha 1868
That one is wrong !

No rush to look at it tho .I'm on holiday next week

Modified to add dates not to confuse with next generation.

The blood line has not died out

Even if the family surname IS  dying out

Only one person showing on all thru lines with that surname but 4 with unlinked trees have the surname .

Was your William a seaman ? Or a coal miner

Did he go  to Canada in 1871 ?.

I found scottish baptism transcript of daughter Jean 1865 to
William MOCHON and Agnes Petrie

Their Marriage  has MAUCHAN spelling

And Scots 1851 with agnes census wllm.Machan born Ireland age 21
Coal miner

" I think this is a different line

Machan ..killed by a bear

I've found the story ...does anyone have access to Canadian newspapers to check

It's not clear from the sentence if it is the son of James senior or James junior  who was killed
 Abridged
"1821 James Machan unemployed weaver from Glasgow Scotland settled in Dalhousie Ontario
John 2nd born of James and Margaret Arnott
Employed as a blacksmith believed to have been killed by a bear at age of 40 years "

Thanks Gillian I'm not good at newspaper searches
Another descendant informs me that this family history has 2 now  known mistakes one is the arrival year in Canada the other is the name of son John's wife transcribed as ARNOLD should be ARNOTT

I suppose another way of confirming the death by bear  story would be to order a death certificate

I.ll leave that to the direct relatives .unless curiosity overcomes me

Late aunt has at least 2 DNA thru lines to descendants of  Margaret Arnott . .

Some of our DNA. Matches may be SMITH

Clarks brother ANDREW b1800
Had a son Alexander MACHAN b 1822

He had at least 4 children with lilias (Lilley) Neilson
Marion Nancy 1846 + Andrew MACHAN b Busby Lanarkshire Scotland

Margaret in 1851 Ontario Canada
The family can be found in 1851 with surname MACHAN

Sometime after his mother Margaret SMITHs
Death ANDREW. Started using her surname

They moved to Huron and 1861 & 1871 same family all have SMITH surname
John 1855James Agne 1857 and Jane 1863
May have been baptised as SMITH
All the sons used MACHEN as a middle name on some records

I am gradually working thru all MACHAN. DNA matches I now have 12 thru lines to descendants of the John Machan who was ' eaten by a bear in 1859 ' .
His youngest daughter Jane was born a month after his death .

The gravestone has an animal carved on it .
