George Swan, Tobacco Pipe Manufacturer died 9 April 1881 aged 63,  usual residence 115 Albert Street Leith.  Married  1st Jane Clark, 2nd Mary Clark - Parents: George Swan, Coal contractor Gas Works and Alison Banks and advised by his daughter Henrietta Swan.

A marriage: 1890   SINCLAIR   DAVID   SWAN   ALISON BANKS   NEWINGTON   EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN

There is an interesting entry in the 1881 census for 115 Albert Street Leith:

Jane      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      26      F      Drapery Sales Woman      Edinburgh, Scotland
Margaret      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      19      F      French Polisher      Edinburgh, Scotland
Euphemia      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      11      F      Scholar      Edinburgh, Scotland
Jemima      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      9      F      Scholar      Edinburgh, Scotland
George      SWAN      Head      Married      51      M      Tobacco Pipe Maker      Edinburgh, Scotland
Jessie      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      13      F      Scholar      Edinburgh, Scotland
Catherine      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      3      F            Edinburgh, Scotland
Mary      SWAN      Wife      Married      47      F            Edinburgh, Scotland
Mary      SWAN      Daughter      Unmarried      21      F      Printer Compositress      Edinburgh, Scotland
Philip      SWAN      Son      Unmarried      7      M      Scholar      Edinburgh, Scotland

There was a Jane Swan/Clark died in 1865, age unknown and the marriage to Mary Clark was on 31st December 1867 - her parents were George Clark/Henrietta Granger.         Could they have been sisters?

In the index for the 1861 census the following have the same reference which could imply the same family grouping.

SWAN   GEORGE   M   42
SWAN   GEORGE   M   21
SWAN   HELEN   F   25
SWAN   HENRIETTA   F   9
SWAN   JANE   F   6
SWAN   JANE   F   34
SWAN   JOHN   M   5
SWAN   JOHN   M   26
SWAN   MARY   F   1
SWAN   WILLIAM   M   8

IGI has his birth of course:
GEORGE SWAN
05 APR 1818     Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland
    Father:    GEORGE SWAN
    Mother:    ALISON BALKS

My 3rd great grandparents are George Swan and Allison Banks.  2nd great grandparents are George Swan and Mary Clark (sister of Jane).  Great grandparents are Jemima Swan and David Hook McKenzie.  Their son Colin was my grandfather.

Would love to share any information.  I have acquired quite a few records for this line.

My apologies if the posts more that once.  I was trying to attach a photo of Jemima, unsuccessfully.

I have been in touch with someone from Canada who helped me piece this info together, maybe you know her, Irene McKenzie?
Would really love to get more info on the Swans as they are hard to trace and well lets face it, not all the facts are available online.

Hope to hear from you soon, e-mail (*)

Cheers
Iain

Hi all  :)

Just caught up with this thread and remembered that I too have Swan surnames in my tree from Liberton, Midlothian.....starting with William Swan b 1734 whom married a Margaret McAlpine.    They had a daughter Isabel b 1759 whom married a Adam Borthwick.    William and Margaret also had the following children...

Isabel b 1759
John b 1760
Janet b1763
James b 1766
Marion b 1768
William b 1772
Agnes b 1774
Margaret b 1776

Do any of these 'Swans' fit with anyone else?

Cheers
 :D
Kimberly

Hiya

Been a while since last on here, but I've been in contact with a woman in Edinburgh who seems to be a distant relation with certs confirming a link with myself and possibly you.

Don't know how accurate her source data is but it's worth chasing up.

cheers

George Swan of Liberton was my mother's grandfather. The info that you have is more or less correct - Mary and Jane Clark were definitely sisters who lived together with their brother Philip when Jane and George were married. He subsequently married Mary and had 5 more children. The youngest, Catherine Swan, was my grandmother. I have researched this part of the family in some depth so if you need further info I would be glad to provide it.

Hi Rena

If you could post details it would be very welcomed, as you know you get bits and pieces of info.

As I got info, found out that George(1818) was married 3 times, to Isabella Sommerville, then to Jane Susan Clark & Mary Clark. So still a lot of catching up to do.

Cheers
Iain

Hi Iain,

Happy to post all info that we  have with regards to George. We have lots of census info. The branch we come from is George Swan/Mary Clark. What is your connection to George. I will post info by Sunday. Are you a Scottish relative? If there is any specific info you may need let me know.

Regards
Rena
