"Probationer" in 1911 census
« on: Monday 19 January 09 00:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
According to the transcription in the 1911 Census for my GURNER family at 14, Charterhouse Square, London, my gt-grandmother Alice GURNER's occupation is given as Hotel Proprietor - which she indeed was for many years there.  But underneath she is also described as a "Probationer"
Now what would this mean, exactly...?
Very best wishes,
keith

Have you seen the original page or only the transcription, and is it possible that 'probationer' refers to someone else in the household?

The only probationers listed in the Classification of Occupations are junior nurses.

Any use?

Hi, Mean Genie,
Yes, there are so many ridiculous mistranscriptions in this newly revealed 1911 census, one really ought to wait a while till it becomes less expensive to view the original images.  Even on this transcripted page my grandfather's forename Cyril is interpreted as "Gril"; even though "Parish of Glasshouse Yard" is clearly interpreted for most of the birthplaces of my family, my grandfather's is given as "Brish of Glasshouse Yard"; and one day I'll look at the original of the birthplace given for one of the servants, which is "Tolleshurtd'arg"
It did occur to me later that "Probationer" might be a mistranscription for "Prohibitioner", and have something to do with the teetotal nature of my gt-grandma's hotel.  But I'm probably clutching at straws...

Keith,

The servant's birth place is possibly Tolleshunt D'Arcy.  ;)
