just about to make the same comment.

nicely complements the earlier 1881 findings .... and explains absence in 1871.

Right - with Mum's paving the way, wheres William in 1851 and earlier ?

Well done all - I was enjoying a nice meal with cousins of my late mother, who were visiting from the States, and you were all beavering away here!

Looks like the birth we found for James George is him.
Just need daval to come back on line to see all the good work you have done!

Hi All

I've contacted Daval direct as I am also of the Doel family.

To let you all know.

In 1846 Elizabeth Unwin marries John Mason & has a daughter Mary. Mary uses Doel as her surname. In 1851 the family are in lodging in Portsmouth.

In 1852 James George Doel is born. On birth cert father listed as William Doel. Elizabeth should still be a Mason.

In 1855 my great great grandad is born. His birth cert gives his name as William Doel Mason.  However we are all Doel's & he married under the name Doel.

In 1858 Elizabeth marries William & is pregnant at the time.

In 1858 Joseph Henry Doel is born.

In 1861 Elizabeth is living with two of her sons. Mary is with her aunt yet I have no idea where William was for that year.

There is no record of John Mason's death (there are possibilities). He was another marine (as was William snr) & there is another of his place & age with another family in Kent. It looks like Elizabeth was a bigamist so why not John Mason?

Regards Suzanne
